Gas mileage and the average MPG display

I've been driving my CX-9 Touring AWD for a few days, all city driving. My average gas mileage display is showing about 11 mpg. That seems outrageously low to me. I haven't been able to do a total count of miles per gallon of gas put into the tank, because I haven't even filled it up yet.

Your experience: what's your city MPG? Is your gas mileage display accurate?

Here in the cold Northeast, I'm averaging about 13 MPG according to the computer driving about 75% city and 25% highway. The gas mileage is crap on this car. There's no way around it. Mines a Grand Touring AWD with about 10k on the odometer so it's broken in. I do run the climate control on AUTO so the A/C compressor does cycle. Plus winter gas and cold air seems to make things worse. I average about 15 to 16 MPG in Spring and Fall with the same type of driving.

same here - 14-16 around town - maybe 20 on a long highway trip but mostly see 16-17 on average.

On my 2nd tank here, car is new to me, 2010 with 24K miles. Average is 22 MPG, mostly HWY, but had to go to ski resort up the hills/winding road with a full car (passenger/luggage).

Hawk - reset the computer with each fill up of gas for awhile. It's the only way to get detailed readings.

Mine usually reads 13.5 but my calcs have me up to 15.5 max.

But hey, where is there to go in winter, on this god-forsaken rock? (sun) (Heh heh heh,..)

I will start tracking by tank fill as soon as I fill it myself.

I'm disappointed in the mileage, but I'm considering it part of the cost of ownership. I got a great deal, so even if you throw in another $30 per month for "extra" gas over what I would be putting in a Santa Fe, I'm still glad I got it.

Like many people here, I hate the fuel economy of this car. But I forget it very quickly when I start Zoom Zooming around back roads and corners. I'm reminded why I got the car in the first place. It's a small price I pay for a better driving experience.

it's not the expense that bothers me so much, and we have >$4 gas ALL the time.

It the wastefulness, and being promised much better figures. There were more efficient alternatives. It's a "guilt" thing with me. I didn't want to be that guy in the hummer. ;-)

So now I drive her around like an ice-cream truck, and still get lousy mpgs!

Just finished my 1st full tank on a 2011 Touring and got 19.7 mpg with 60% city/40%hwy. I don't know how this compared to the computer display, but I'm pretty happy with that. Beats the 14mpg I was getting in my Sequoia.

We've had our CX-9 for about 1 month; took a short road trip last weekend and showed 19.8 combined, about 80/20 highway/city. On the trip home, the instant mpg was reading 22.5 @ 74 mph.

A couple thoughts:

The Average MPG calculation on the CX-9 is pretty accurate and closer to actual efficiency than I've seen with other cars. I track actual MPG with every fill up and it's usually within 1 mpg (lower) than what the trip computer says.

If you want a recent Average you need to reset it with the INFO button on the center stack. The reset button in the instrument cluster that resets the odometer is does not do anything to the Average MPG or Average MPH calculations.

As with most cars, stop and go driving and heavy footed acceleration kill the mileage on the CX-9. But if you can get to the highway and drive conservatively around town you can do OK. I live in NYC so I do a good amount of driving with traffic lights and heavy traffic. But I also commute mostly on highways. I get between 17 MPG and 19 MPG on most tanks. I think I dropped to 16 once and have had a couple at 20.

I started using this gas mileage keeper app about a month after I got the car... and seem to have averaged 16.5mpg so far.

I usually average 16-18 MPG in mixed driving but I've gotten has high as 23.6 MPG doing 80 MPH ( I was following the flow of traffic in the left lane, had 5-6 cars in front and 5-6 cars in the back of me ) on the highway during a 76 miles trip.
