gas guage not working

i have an '89 b2200 pick-up and the gas guage doesnt work. it says empty when its not and half tank when it is empty etc... i think i need a new sending unit. does anyone know how to install one and where i can get one.
thanks

You may just need a new float. My buddy had a b2200 and the float had a pinhole in it and it sunk to the bottom of the gas tank, or was hanging subsurface (hence the half tank or empty tank readings). A float costs $1.50 at any mazda dealer - a sending unit may be $200 or so. just make sure you drain the gas tank and simply disconnect it (will need two people to do this), then disconnect the sending unit and remove - check the float for holes.

They're about $40 - $60 from the dealer. The issue is very common among the BF body 323's from 86-89.
I don't know about your particular vehicle, but I was able to change the part on my vehicle in about one hour.

The sending units are known to fail on the B series and Ranger pickups. When I work at the local Mazda dealer service was replacing them about twice a week.
