Gas cap teather - Broke off!

Stopped to load up on gas and open the door. Untwisted the gas cap and let it drop as usual and it hit the ground!

The plastic teather to the door had broken off. Not in any place that would have been pinched by the door either.

I find this a bit premature for the plastic teather to break off so soon.

Anyone else have this problem?

Does anyone think Mazda warranty will cover the repair?

Why not?
It is not tear-n-wear. It is located between two bumpers (thus, bumper-to-bumper warranty!). It should be covered as long as it is within 3yr/36K.

Next time, be gentle with it.

I broke mine right away and they covered it. Then I broke it again twisting it the wrong way, but I replaced the cap with a locking one anyway.

Cool. Thanks for the advice.

I'm headed over tomorrow morning to see what they say.

Mine broke off too, and they replaced it under warranty. They have to order the entire gas cap assembly, as the tether cannot be replaced individually.

My dealership has replaced several of these. You'd think Mazda would learn a lesson and not make the tether so damn hard and non-flexible. My replacement tether is just as crappy as the original.

Mazda shares part bins with Toyota a lot. The gas cap tether could be one of them as well. I found a similar one on my wife's Prius. Honda uses a cap holder instead (like BMW).
On a side note, in case you don't know yet, Aisin (CX9 transmission maker) is controlled/owned by Toyota. Also, Mazda uses the same (almost) GPS NAVI system as the ones on Toyota. The list goes on.

Recent news says that Mazda will OEM Toyota hybrid systems. After Ford dumped its shares of Mazda down to 13%, Mazda is getting even closer to Toyota.

I rather have toyota parts in a mazda than ford parts! it's all for the better if it goes this way!

Just came back from the Mazda service departement and they will replace it without question. Unfortunately they had to order the piece and it won't be in until tomorrow (and I am out of town). Good thing they are only 3 miles away.

On a side note, I asked about them ordering the Yoko Parada Spec-X for my wife's new CX-7. The parts department orders them from Tire Rack also and they said the local Delaware warehouse indicates they should be receiving a shipment by the 22nd (tomorrow). So I can use my new $200 Mazda credit towards the $550 price tag. Sweet.

I also noticed this nice flyer on the service center desks for rebates on tires. Buy 4 Yokohama before July 31 and get a $250 (value) Reactor Sport Watch. That would bring my watch count up to about 22 or 23 :-). See attached flyer for your use.

I think I'm going for it since the tax rate is going up Aug 1st in Mass.

This topic is funny. I intentionally destroyed my plastic teather and replaced it with a black piece of dacron fishing line. The stupid teather keeps you from being able to properly stow the cap. I used to have to wedge it in between the locking tab on the door. Oh, BTW I also attached a stick-on magnet to the cap so I can stick it anywhere while fueling.

Had I not goteen a locking cap, I was going to take a short piece of coated cable and crimp it onto the trimmed ends of the cap and anchor. I did this instead...
