From the Factory Manual. Engine oil capacity: Dry fill=6.8 quarts. Refill oil & Filter=6.0 Quarts. Refill Oil only=5.6 quarts. Now comes the qualifier. "The oil residue in the engine can be variable due to a variety of conditions" I have found that when I change the oil & filter cartridge in my CX7 (letting warm oil drain till only drops), that if I refill with a measured 5.6 quarts that the oil level at first is about 4 mm over the full line but, the next morning cold the level is on the full line. One look at my oil filter canister/can and it can not be 0.4 quart capacity difference. The interesting thing is that the dry fill is 6.8 quarts so a considerable amount remains in the engine when changing oil. Just my observations and shop manual information. Ed Hayes

Ed,

I've noticed the same. Even when I let the oil drain for a long time, I still can't put more than 5.5 qts. I've seen on the manual where it says 6qts of oil, but I never noticed about 6.8 qts. What page is that on? If this is true, then yes, a whole quart of old oil will always remain in the engine. I assume in the oil cooler and/or cooler lines?

Rick

Rick: The 6.8 quarts for a dry (new engine). We will never get 6.8 Q in unless we do a full rebuild. The numbers came from the Factory Service Manual.Section 01-11-4

Me neither Rick. Probably allot of oil in the DOHC head, oil cooler and cooler lines is my guess. In addition; it appears that the camshaft chain is running in some sort of sump that is holding oil at the bottom of the chain. Difficult to tell from their hand drawn pictures. Ed
