Fueling up with engine running?!?!

not to mention how bad it is for the environment to have gas spilled all over the place...go ahead call me a tree hugger...but it's still bad
Tree hugger!

(Thought I'd do it since no one else did..)

I never shut off my car while filling up. I always leave the engine running. I have occasionally had the tank refuse to take more than 3 gallons or so. I usually just bounce the rear and then pump it slowly. ( the rear of the car, and pump the gas that is )

Once in a blue moon I have had gas attendants say something about fueling while the engine is running. I'll usually turn it off just to make them happy.

I love the responses here..."This was all started by the oil companies" or "You put extra strain on your starter" (rofl)

I think the basic issue is the idea of leaving a very powerful and heavy piece of machinery running without anyone in the drivers seat. Chances might be slim that it would roll or move, but it's just not a good idea to get out of a running car for any reason. To paraphrase the old football adage, only a few things can happen when you leave a running car unattended and most of them are bad.

Actually there are a number of reasons to turn off the engine while filling and a number of them have been stated already.

I can also tell you that it may cause problems with your fuel level sender. I know there are cases of filling while running the engine resulted in level gauges showing the incorrect level in the tank. I don't have any experience with Mazda's doing this but I know of at least one manufacturer that has had problems with this.

Just turn the damn car off! Be curdious and safe to those around you, you are not the only one at the gas station. Rules and percautions are made and put up for a reason, because it isnt safe and it is just foolish and ignorant.

Occasionally I filled up my Protege and old RX7s with the Engine running when it was cold out. With my diesel truck I refuel all the time with it running. Diesel isn't nearly as flammable as Gasoline since it works off compression. You can throw a lit match in a tank of diesel and you'll get a wet match. Throw a lit match in Gasoline and BOOM!

Never Happened to me while filling..and i used to pump gas...

The only things remotely close is that the nozzle kept clicking..as if the car was full..but it really wasn't..

in your engine, there is basically a fire going on down there
and you fill gas, which may cause an accident
I mean, how hard is it to turn it off and then turn it on
saving gas, blah, blah, blah, I am not flaming or riducling (sp?) any body here, but also that goes out to my everyday friends that do that stupid s***. I refuse to have the engine on when they fill it up with me in the car, i make them to turn off the engine
I've seen enough fires to freak me up and heard enough stories from my parents and news that it is not worth the risk

on the starter thing, man, c'mon, who cares, it is a car, true, we are in love with those, but still, not to the extend to allow fuel to blow back to us and s*** like that

be smart and follow the rules
they put that for reasons, not to piss you off
it is for your own and the people around you safety's
it is like not wearing a seatbelt, or going over the speed limit(which we all do...lol)

conclusion.....just turn the car off, it is for your saftey
hope i didn't sound like your mom's...lol

Wow. Before reading this thread I've never heard of people that leave their car on while filling up. What's so cool of doing this anyway???

There's nothing cool about it at all... The main reason I started this thread was because I accidently (for the first time) left my car running while fueling, and it spit the fuel back at me.

So, with that said, can anyone answer the question as to WHY it did this? I'm guessing that with the overwhelming response of people who actually leave their cars running, that this may have just been a weird incident for myself.

i think it's safe to say...you and those around you might be safer if the car was not left running unattended while you pump the stuff that fuels the fire in the engine. just in case it was to spill all over you and the car and maybe started a fire.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isnt the fuel tank pressurized. So taking the gas cap off when the car is running would not be good and thus causing a CEL to come on. Isnt it true when your driving if you dont screw the gas cap on all the way it causes a CEL. I thought it worked like a vacuum system, or I may be wrong. ;)

Ask Aerosmith's drummer (and his burned out Ferrari) about filling up with the car running.

His car wasn't running while he was filling it up--the fuel filler door is in the rear of the car (Ferrari Testarossa), close to the engine. The engine was hot, and fuel spilled on it which then ignited. The car was destroyed and he was pretty badly burned.

Yeah, Take that all you tree huggers!!! And verify info B4 U post
