Fuel gauge accuracy?

hey another houstonian =]

yeah i have to take 59 to 288 to beltway 8 every other day for school so traffic is BRUTAL.
I just moved to Seattle, but was in Houston for about 10 years. NASA layoffs got me.

Yeah, that side of town has some terrible ass traffic.

I've found that the fuel pump tends to shut off early when filling up the 2, with my Ultragauge indicating around 9.5 gallons and the 2's gas gauge showing full. It's possible to get another 1.5+ gallons in, which makes the gauge seem more "accurate" in relation to miles driven.

OT: Is everybody's fuel pump loud? Mine is the loudest damn thing in the car.

Sorry to revive such an old thread but my question pertains to this ^

My fuel pump is mega loud when the gas tank gets low (around 2 bars). Is this normal? Car is a 2012 Mazda 2 Touring with around 800 miles. I thougt it was something that would go away once the car started to break in but it has happened every time my tank gets low.

I don't know what a fuel pump sounds like, but I happen to be on my last bar of gas. Will listen for anything out of the ordinary.

im actually really glad this thread was revived i had a few questions about the amount of gallons the 2 holds myself lol, now i know its not just me who thought the whole fuel capacity issue was a little fishy. so it is actually an 11.3 gal tank but really mazda wants you to only use 7 or 8 of those gallons before filling up again? i mean i guess i understand it and that way i never have to worry when i only have one bar left. but why not show the actual amount you have left?

The sound is very noticeable when idleing. It's like a whining sound.

From what I understand about the tank capacity, one gallon is unreachable by the fuel pump so I don't think it's possible to bring the tank all the way down.

Another thing, I can always put an extra gallon or two in my tank after the pump kicks off. I know it's probably not good for the car but if I don't put in that extra gallon or so the first mark on my gauge goes down almost as soon as I leave the gas station. Maybe the design of the filler neck on these tanks makes the pump kick off before the tank to get 100% full?

Possibly. But I'd like to give out a big jealous wtf at the fact that your gas is so much cheaper than in Canada. Driving down to Philly on Friday, and 3/4 tank cost me 10 bucks less than back home.

Need to know

I'd love an answer to this question. I really like my Mazda 2, but losing the first fuel bar at 15 to 20 miles (sometimes as low as 10) bugs me to no end. I get the advertised mpg, and have gotten up to 38 on the highway. Still, losing that first bar so fast makes me grumble every time. Is it a design issue? Just more Mazda encouragement not to let the pump go dry?

We can go a long way on zero, there's always 6-7l left in there. It's always good to know for roadtrips :)
I run the car to zero and check how many L I'm adding to the tank each time. After I'll add only the average L left in the tank and set the millage counter to zero and see how many KM I can do on that amount of L I added. This would give me an idea of when I'm really in trouble lol

I feel my gauge is pretty accurate. 10 bars, 10 gallons. First bar disappears around the 30mile mark. 50% I'm anywhere from 120 - 160.

I have an ultragauge. When the "E" starts blinking we have exactly 15% of maximum fuel capacity im the tank.

I try not to look at all that stuff because the fuel economy is so terrible :P

That said, I don't find it very accurate. It doesn't seem to use the average consumption value when telling you how far you can go after you fill up, because it's always off by ~25%.

I find the trip computer's remaining range gauge to be a better indication of fuel remaining than the actual gauge. When it hits 0 or gets close to it, that means time to fill up. The E starts blinking with like 60 indicated miles remaining on the car.

I get 6-7litters of gas left in the tank when I get to 0 at fill up. I look at it as a safety net

Very helpful thread for a new owner, thanks all. The fuel gauge accuracy is the only frustrating/baffling thing about my 2 experience so far. It's not linear and the blinking E is way too conservative - in my Sport with no trip computer, makes it more difficult to determine real MPG.

What did you pay for the upper sensor ? Ive had my gauge fixed once by the dealer and after two years its back doing the same thing as before.

It operates fine till down to three blocks....stops there untill the last gallon and BOOM...one block and counting down from 45 miles.

What tells you its the upper sensor and not the lower? Where is the upper sensor ?
