Fuel Filter Change

So my cars at about 75k miles. All the maintenance is up to date except the fuel filter. It says to replace it at 60k miles, a little late, but anybody done this yet. I haven't looked to see where it's located and I don't have a service book. Just looking for a little info. Also, I guess I'll have to get one at the dealer, because the local parts stores don't seem to carry them.

Most likely, it's in the fuel tank. Common placement these days. There may be one outside the tank.

Pita, anyone know if there's an access panel under the rear seat? Anything before I go searching. I haven't had the nerve to drop 400 on a service book yet.

Yeah, the manual says it's an in tank design, thus, drop tank and that it needs a special tool to remove the pump cap. If you are getting good fuel pressure, I wouldn't go into it. If you aren't, then well, your decision.

Well I don't exactly want to wait until I have bad fuel pressure. The service book says to replace the filter at 60k miles. There has to be a filter somewhere, they wouldn't just rely on the sock in the tank to protect against contaminants getting in the system.

The filter is en bloc with the pump in tank so, you have to drop it, disassemble the pump/filter assembly, replace the filter and sock and button it up. This is not uncommon these days. Those can filters in line like on '80s/90s port EFI cars are decidedly out of fashion.

hardly anybody ever replaces the in tank filter unless there is an issue. I could see if it was external but in the tank I would not bother with. there are so many things that you mess up in doing this. you could get t back together and the gauge not work. or it leak around the seal cause you did not have the right tool to take the pump out. I am a dealer teck for acura which also uses in tank filter and have never had to replace one for an issue yet. leave it alone or let some one with the right tools take care of it. also you could ask a dealer if this something that they actually rec. you replace or if it is something that is left alone until an issue arises...at which point you would likely have an issue with the pump then with the filter anyway...

Most dealerships will soak it in fuel injector cleaner and put it back, (Toyota uses lifetime filters), they clean them but don't replace them often. You can achieve the same effect by using Seafoam or concentrated fuel injector cleaner.

yea, gotta remove the tank. it says that you have to disconnect some stuff first by going under your backseat, and there's a support frame you have to drop. but here's a pic of the pump assy...

Interesting. That looks more like a screening unit then a filter. I don't see why they don't use an inline filter, they seemed to work well on every other car I've owned. I also don't see why it is in the manual under basic maintenance. I am not worried about doing the work, but If there is no point to it I will leave it alone for now.

Well, here's the dealio...you're James May. If my experience of working on cars for over 25 years is any indication, almost nobody services fuel filters, period. I can't count the number of filters I've found completely clogged, full of rust and OEM at 150,000 miles. I used to just change them out regardless, especially on older EFI Fords. I often solved driveability problems without having to even think about it doing that.

Well it's a good thing I've been servicing my own cars and don't give a crap how everybody else takes care of their vehicles. I've also worked as a Porsche/European mechanic and have not run into too many instances where people didn't have their fuel filter regularly serviced.

Where did you see that? I just looked at the maintenance schedule for my MS3 and didn't see any mention of replacing that filter...
