Fuel cap holder

So I don't know about you guys but I am very OCD about certain things. One thing that irks me is the absentism of a proper fuel cap holder, and no the tether is not the best. So since I work for a network of dealers I took it upon myself to find one...low and behold I found it.

Honda part #74423-SP0-000
List $5.50

So for those of you that are annal ( like me) and can't stand just letting the fuel cap hang while filling up and with time eventually scratch your quarter panel or if your tether is long gone this is perfect.

The holder has (5) plastic tabs in the back where it would clamp on to the fuel lid, but you won't need those, so carefully slice them off with a razor blade or a knife. Now that you have a nice flat surface add double-sided tape, clean the middle inner part of the fuel lid and adhere. VOILA!

Does your CX-9 have a fuel cap holder?

Too bad the capless fuel tank wasn't one of the Ford innovations that made it over to Mazda.

Good Idea...

Awesome idea!

Thanks for this idea! (2thumbs)(2thumbs)(2thumbs) You're not alone on being anal about MZ5's not having a gas cap holder. Since I got my MZ5, the tether has been cut off by the previous owner, so I always have to place the cap on top of the fuel pump and there's been a couple of times when I would almost forget the cap. My option was to buy a new cap with the tether attached, but $35.00 for a new cap??? So this inexpensive option to the issue is great. Now I just need to make the trip to a Honda dealership.

Great find! I would prefer a better holder.

Side note, you guys/gals realize there IS a cap holder, right? Took a while to figure out but it's there! Problem is NJ gas attendants don't know n let it hang/bang against the body...

There is? Please share. Perhaps mine was missing. From both my MZ5 and CX-9. Actually the new gen MZ5 do have a built in little hook on the fuel lid where you can route the tether away from the body, but 1st gens don't have it. I know this because I had a 2011 MZ5 as a rental for a week.

Yes please do share. Where is this cap holder on 1st gen MZ5's?

Take a look at the Owners Manual. (RTM is what I was always taught)(lol2)

This is from the CX9 manual but it is the same across the Mazda line.

https://www.mymazda.com/MusaWeb/pdf/manuals/2011_CX9_OM.pdf

See 3-48

It is also posible to position the fuel cap onto the fuel door itself instead of by the tether. I've seen this with the cap facing the other way too. No add ons required. Just fiddle around a bit and you will see the cap actually fits there with the handle portion facing outwards.

That's one option. You can also insert the two little flat clip/nubs on the door cover into the seal on the side of the cap. Either way, not very intuitive when other people have to use it..

I just went out to check both my MZ5 and my CX9 and neither have the tiny hook like metal tab pictured on the OM. Also, the fact that you are able to wedge your cap on the fuel lid that was just coincidence. I tried wedging the cap on my MZ5 and it wouldn't stay. The CX9 I was able to get it wedged as in your pic but I had to fiddle with it a lot and even then it would have fallen off with the vibrations of inserting the gas nozzle. My $5 holder works great! I tried it last night!!

The MS3 forum had a thread with many pics on this. I take no credit for any of it since I don't read manuals and was wondering WTF as well. It is possible that 06-07 don't have the tabs. I have an '08 so it could be a new 'feature'.

Pic of how the cap 'wedged' into the metal clips for an '08. I'd still prefer to cut the cord. This way, it won't bang against the body when attendant fills up. You cannot fill up your own gas in NJ where it is $.20-.30 cheaper than PA.

My 2006 doesn't have that little hook, nor does it need it. The cap wedges neatly into the tab on the right of the door, just put the cap base flat against the door and slide it over to the tabs, it's almost as if the base had a magnet in it or something! Takes very little to hold it in place, actually a very ingenious design, too bad it's soo poorly documented!! I'l ltake a pic in the morning and post it.

Just let it hang. It's not a Ferrari.
Letting it hang is ok but letting it bang everytime you get gas, not so much. It's not like the gas attendants are gentile. For me, cutting cord may work but it might end up on the roof... what to do?...
