front passenger airbag seat sensor

we have a 2012 CX9, 2 months old. When my wife sits in the front passenger seat about half of the time, the airbag off light is on. She only weighs about 105#, and the dealer couldn't replicate the problem. Anyone have any info on this?

Thanks
Scott

It is about right.
The cutoff weight is about 100lb+.
Depending on how you sit on the seat, the light might come on or off.
Put a few heavy items on the lap, and see if the light will go off.

I posted to this issue not too long ago. My wife is a lightweight, weighting 102# and sets it light off every single time. She either needs to put a bag on her lap or I have to apply pressure to her seat to turn the light off! Dealer said that there is nothing wrong as I can't set it off at 150#. I honestly don't want the airbag off just in case something bad happens. It stinks but there is nothing that can be done.

I have this same problem. This makes no sense to me. The sensor is supposed to keep the airbag from going off if a child is in the front seat--is the average weight of a 12 year old 100 lbs???

"Air Bag Off" light comes on if a person who weighs less than 110 sits on the fron pass. seat.
I know that by observing my kids. (w/o going into more details)

The sensor is suppose to activate for weight of 65 pounds or more is on the seat. I have the same problem with my 113 pound son and was told he isn't sitting in it right. That's twice the weight and yes, he sits in it right, just like you and I do. I am going to make a formal complaint to the BAR and to Mazda Corp. as I have read many forums with the same response from every dealer-nothing is done. This is a faulty sensor and can result in death and major lawsuits. The sensor needs to be recalled or replaced. Mine is still under warranty. I think the dealerships just don't want to pay out and make up excuses.

I noticed the same thing when I ride in the passenger seat and I am about 115-120. I am very concerned as we are going to be going to FL in a few weeks, I'd hat to get into an accident and not have the airbag work as it should. I tried to look in the manual to see if there was a way to turn it on but no luck :(

I don't buy this "Working per Federal law" rationale. I have another car--2007 Lexus--and it NEVER had such a problem.

A quick search on google turns up similar complaints for other cars for people around that 110lbs threshold:

I bet the airbag sensor algorithms are quite complex; it needs to take into account impact data, occupant weight, seat position, seat belt use, etc.. I even found one article talking about the difficulty of determining if a child car seat is present or not - i.e., is there a 111 lbs adult in the seat (airbag on) or a smaller child + car seat (airbag off)
