Fox News on the Mazda5

That review was mediocre at best

fox news story on the mazda5, mostly nice things to say it seems

His writing style has a lot to be desired and he really didn't put details into context. His analogies also sucked wind. His comment about torque steer was totally off-base. In the 3 years I've owned my 5 it has never jerked the wheel out of my hand.

Can you tell I hated that review.:-)

Perhaps you understand the concept of driving with both hands on the wheel...

Come to think of it, I don't remember any noticeable torque steer with the 5. Maybe if you really hammered it from a dead stop? MY Toyota ECHO is like that. If you really hammer it there is a bit of torque steer, but hey, it's an econobox, so I didn't expect extreme refinement.

The reviewer definitely could use a bit of refinement. Not sure about the acceleration analogy either. I find that it accelerates very smoothly and the VVT kicks in like a older turbo (eg a little lag before the power hits full on)

the review is a joke... barely skims the surface and like many car reviews I read its not from a realistic perspective. Sent them a nasty gram, told em if they want it done right in the future, to call me. The price, mileage, n advantages from a consumer's point of view just aren't right.

Nice pics ;)

#1??? I wish I had the time to find those 2005-2006 articles which compared the Mazda5 vs. minivans... oh, how things change (headshake

You mean the ones where the reviewers say the 5 is a joke because minivan X can do 0-60 is sub 8 seconds, holds 8 and geting 25MPG highway?

strangely, they never mention that those vans list like a supertanker at sea when you turn. And the Mazda 2.3L's imitation of the classic Rotary sound and powerband is lost on many as well... (well it's not quite as sweet sounding as a 13B, but sounds better than most 4s or V6s during acceleration.

Also not, I grew up in the original minivan generation as well. My parents also didn't have one. We had a Ford Taurus station wagon. It al leas has most independent suspension and handled quite well as opposed to those original minivans.

i have owned 3 rx7s and not one of them sounded like my 5 that i can attest to (boom06)

Gotcha! the wind op of the 2.3 just reminds me of the RX-7. Really hits the sweet spot around 4k, but doesn't pull like a rotary from 4k-7k. Still, I've owned/driven a few different 4cyl cars and none sounded as nice as the 5 does from the inside at least.

Now if you could get a 13B, esp the Gen 3 Twin Turbo in a 5......

yeah my Turbo FC didn't sound anything like my Mazda 5 either, and actually I think the Mazda 5 has better low end power than it does top end... The rotary is soo smooth till ya hit boost then BAM cya. They do have a rotary 5 actually, can you say Hydrogen? (gun)

My wife complains about the torque steer all the time. I've never noticed any, and neither has the service dept. I suspect the writer is a metrosexual with skinny arms...

I'll also add

I also don't agree with his lukewarm assessment of the 5's "sportiness". I drive a Speed3 during the week and the 5 most of the weekend and except for the power and clutch feel the 5 feels very sporty and even more "tossable" than the speed in some respects. The car also loves living around the 80 to 100mph area but I still don't think his assessment of the the 5's power is accurate. Sure it needs to rev a bit but it's far from the dead spot he alludes to when the car reaches 30mph. Then again I have a 5 speed. The auto maybe geared differently.

No matter this guy is a banana head. (idhitit)

With regards to torque steer in my 2 5MTs the only comment I have is: I wish they had MORE torque to create some "real" torque steer (laugh), I don't feel any :D
