Ford Probe turbo?

I saw a 89 Probe turbo the other day. I had no idea such a car existed. The guy said it was from the USA. Maybe that's why I have never seen one before. He was unaware of the HP of the engine. I took a quick look under the hood but the turbo assembly was under a heat sheild. I didnt see an IC anywhere obvious either. Anyone got info on this car? I need to know about these things. :)
 
The original Probe GT's were Turbo 4's. That was back in the day when they were considering replacing the Mustang with the Probe.
We all know how that turned out.
I think they were 150 hp or therabouts. It was a 2.2 litre if memory serves.
 
if memory serves..haha someone's seen the movie evolution a few too many times..haha..or i should put down my crack lightbulb..yeah..they're out there..crap..but they're out there.
 
Reasonably quick cars. They have a decent top end, but handle like crap. They have a dendency to plow rather than turn.
 
must have been a really small turbo to only put that much extra horses on the 2.2. They would've been pushing around 120 or so N/A I think?
 
i've always thought probes wouldnt be half as bad if their name wasnt something that goes in a butt. i wonder what the fastest 1st gen probe gt is...or if there's much aftermarket for them
 
probe turbos are pretty quick for an even scarier drive purchase a Mercury Topaz with the probe 2.2L turbo engine. Those cars are smaller than miatas and make nice power.
 
My dad use to have one, and 89 to be exact. It was a 2.2L that put out 190HP. The thing is Car and Driver tested the car and said that there was no way that it had 190, they thought more around the area of 210.

my friend just bought a 94 probe GT and says that it has 160hp and he wants to race everyone that we work with. he bought an ebay intake and an ebay catback. he says next he wants to purchase a cf hood and a metal wing.....i told him not too, but he will. i says he gonna get coilovers and i told him that they are pretty expensive. he says not really, they are like 50 or 60 bucks more then springs. i laughed so hard. i told him not to live on ebay and buy some quality s***. hopefully he takes my advice. i talked him outta the bodykit so far...... the saga continues

the fastest i've seen is deep into 11's, making over 400whp. probetalk.com/forums has a lot of info on them.

replica- they came with an fe2, similar to the fe3. i think the fe2 is sohc 8v. the fe3 does drop right in though

jophus- tell your friend his car is slow. i used to own one with more done to it than he has and it was still slow. also direct him to probetalk.com for some useful info
 
nothing if they're well designed parts. most of the intakes on ebay for the probe just put the filter right after the vaf, which puts it right into the path of hot fan air. and nothing is wrong with the parts at all, but an intake and a cat back aren't going to give any gains worth noting
 
nothing at all. i got the intake as a temporary, but i feel that buying everything you can imagine from ebay will only leave you upset in the long run. i just want him to purchase quality parts, because it sounds like he wants to actual make something outta his probe and i don't want his parts to take a s*** on him after a short period of time.
