Ford Probe turbo?

I bought a 90 Probe GT about a month ago, it didn't run, but now after new Battery, Plugs, Oil Change w/ Filter, Air Filter, an fresh 91 Octane with Injector cleaner. Started right up.

Had to fix a vaccum leak that fix the idle. There is a little knock that sounds like its coming from the top of the head, but i've researched on Probetalk.com forums and it could be from the tensioner arm wearing out and throwing the timing off.

And over 200 hp stock probe? Not from the info i've seen at www.performanceprobe.com

But i could be wrong.

Fun little project we have going, but this car has a ton of interior work.

Yeah, the first generation Probe turbos are the quickest out there. In 1993, they came out with the GT (2.5L 24-valve V6 - KL-03) with 164 stock hp. That's what I have. The KL-ZE engine is a direct swap from Japan (used in J-spec Probes and MX-6's) and puts down 200 hp from the factory. And you guys are right, these cars don't respond well to mods because the OBDII computer systems seem to be too 'smart' and reprogram the engine inputs to cancel any custom parts out of the equation.

93-95 still have obd I. they respond OK to mods, but they are fairly low static compression engines with mild cams, so it takes work to make mods do anything. n2o and super/turbo charging are the best way to get power out of a kl-03

I saw a 89 Probe turbo the other day. I had no idea such a car existed. The guy said it was from the USA. Maybe that's why I have never seen one before. He was unaware of the HP of the engine. I took a quick look under the hood but the turbo assembly was under a heat sheild. I didnt see an IC anywhere obvious either. Anyone got info on this car? I need to know about these things. :)
145HP 190TQ 2.2 I4 also found in the MX-6 & 626 which came with a limited 4 wheel steering edition.

Engine's week point is the head gasket and 12valve head and small IHI VJ-11 turbo + no LSD = one wheel wonder. It does have a good cast iron block, mods well, small turbo spools quick but has globs of torque steer.

Anything else?

must have been a really small turbo to only put that much extra horses on the 2.2. They would've been pushing around 120 or so N/A I think?
Heh Heh, wrong decade buddy. My 87 Cougar V6 was barely pushing 120 and it had a 3.8. I can't imagine Ford/Mazda getting the same 120hp out of a 4-banger two years later.

Anyway, talk about a sled. The Cougar was a great cruising car but it took time to get up to speed. The headgasket is what did her in. I got 50 bucks for it at a junk yard (the only time I was glad she weighed alot).

My bad, I meant OBDI. Thanks.

96+97 have obdII, it isn't the obd system that sucks, their ecu is very similar to the protege's i believe with its issues. not as bad, but similar

Hi I'm Justin I stumbled across this forum on a search engine and thought it was kind of interesting. I have a 95pgt with a KLZE motor swap that kicks out 225hp its DOHC 24v and the 95pgt v6 24V is the fastest stock probe and not saying this because I have one but its true that it was the probes best year when it came to options engine and everything. The stock 95pgt has 160-164hp which of course is why I did the KLZE engine swop. The 160hp really felt like more and I loved it but I have fuel in my blood and will never settle for anything, anything and everything can always get better somehow no car is perfect.

the 93 pgt is the lightest (least safety features), so possibly the fastest, but they're all pretty much the same so saying one year or another is the fastest doesn't really work, all changes were minor from year to year. i would agree that all around though the 95 is the best year, the newer styling, but still obdI so no stupid issues with that to deal with. a ze stock has 200hp, there is no 225hp ze in stock form.

Ford's 2.3L Pinto motor was running 175-210HP in the SVO (83-86) and Turbocoupe (83-88) They did make 3 DOHC 2.3L turbo SVO's that were pushing more than 300Hp at low boost levels....

Those early 3.8's were s***...had a 84 Capri with one. POS.\

Oh, I forgot the 79 Pace Car/Cobra. Carb'd turbo 2.3 140HP...

Correct, under boost Ford managed to get some power out of their 4-bangers...more power than the V8 at the time to be specific...but my comment was in reference to the N/A power from the 4-banger which would have been s***.

Oh, OK. Yeah the NA wasn't too powerful. Any NA ford for that matter was pathetic. 140 HP 5.0's.. . :(

hahahaha, stage 6 turbo. does that work well with the headers?

I dont know if it would work with the stock ones to be honest because the headers were the second thing I changed. I had some custom made from my friends welding shop they did a great job, they look great and I could feal a diffirence when I put them on.

so how many pounds of boost are you running on stage 6? hopefully at least 20, and a little shot of nitrous to help spool. can i get a full list of mods? your setup sounds super
