I think this "might" reduce the chance of seeing a Mazda2 :(, but on the upside, DSG like tranny?

Where are the fender chromed vents? LOL

When Brazil was eliminated from the challenge to see which country would produce the new Ford Fiesta, aimed to be sold in North America for the first time, little doubt was left about the place that would be responsible for this task. Mexico was the obvious choice for Ford. Besides being able to sell the car to the USA and Canada, due to Nafta, this country also has a free trade agreement with Brazil, what opens the entire South American market to the new vehicle. Anyway, official information is always good and Ford has made its obvious decision official today, in Mexico City, with the presence of Alan Mulally, Fords CEO, and the president of Mexico, Felipe Caldern Hinojosa.

Although the announcement was only a confirmation to the obvious decision, there is an information that was not that obvious and will surely please a lot of North American customers: the hatchback version of the car will also be sold in the USA, in a sportier package, possibly aimed at presenting some resistance to Mini, the car that has shown automotive executives the Americans also have a taste for European vehicles. The decision to sell the car in North America can also be accounted for the fact that the Mexican and the Brazilian market appreciate hatchbacks. Considering it would be a good idea to serve these two markets, why not USA as well?

Besides the hatchback, the compact sedan that will come out of Cuautitln plant will be entirely inspired by the Verve Sedan presented at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show (possibly only with minor changes). The plant will go through massive modifications in order to produce the compact vehicles, once it nowadays is settled to produce F-Series pickup trucks. The fabrication processes for cars and trucks are very different, what explains the long time the plant will take to start delivering Fiestas first units, only in early 2010. The total investment for the reform amounts to US$ 3 billion and includes producing diesel engines at the Chihuahua plant and a new transmission plant in Guanajuato, in a joint venture with Getrag (GFT), to produce DSG-like gearboxes, the best ones for reducing emissions and improving fuel consumption. The investment will also generate 4,500 direct new jobs and 30,000 indirect jobs.

if it was, why was it one of the best sellers in the rest of the world for the past 25 years?

I've owned many Fords in the past (yeah, ran in the family) but still not a big fan of them myself. Yet I agree, the 5-door looks nice.

The Mazda2 5 door is sexy too but if it doesn't come, wife or I wouldn't mind a Fiesta, just the name sucks (boom06)

BTW, so to keep the faith, LOL:

So, assuming the Fiesta and the Mazda2 were mechanically very similar or even identical, and all other factors (price, interior, style, features) were equal, would you all rather have a Mexican-made Ford Fiesta or a Chinese-made Mazda2.

Just curious.

doesn't matter to me. just so long as the weight is low, the suspension is tight, and the engine is revvy. i'm not going to discount a mechanically-identical car just b/c the badge says "ford" instead of "mazda."

My choices:

1. Mazda2 (made in Japan)
I do believe the only one made in China will be the sedan, but not the hatchback. I would however wait for a 2nd year model. My 2006 Mazda5 is great, but I took the risk of buying from the very first batch that shipped to the US in 2005 and so far I have gotten 1 major recall, 1 defective liftgate strut and many TSBs. Still nothing critical and love the thing :D. As per my 2008 Mazda5: zero issues so far.

2. Ford Fiesta (made in Mexico)
My brother works as a quality engineer for a car parts supplier in Mexico. They manufacture and supply all type of parts (mostly exhausts) for a range of brands including Toyota, VW, Ford and GM. Quality control guidelines are as stiff as any other global company and is mandated directly from Detroit. In addition, the mentioned Ford plant in Cuautitlan has built Ford cars and trucks for generations, so they know what they are doing. Also, Ford has better recognition as a brand in Mexico than here, that is a fact

3. Mazda2 (made in China), but not sure
China is newbie on making cars, I don't know about their quality control processes, but from what I understand, it is terrible. I watched a report the other day where the VWs made and sold there are crap but they get away with it due to the lax local government automobile pollution/safety/maintenance laws.

Yes! I was hoping they would bring the hatch here. This car is hot. I think it's much better looking than the Mazda3, especially the interior, and I'm normally a serious Mazda fanboy when it comes to recent Mazda styling (and I do like the Mazda2 quite a bit).

:) I'd have to go with Fiesta...I've had 3 of the original iterations of the Fiesta back when I was in high school/first moved down to Georgia. It'd be for sentimental reasons only.

Fiesta for sure. Why? Because Fiesta = Party, and Mexico knows how to party like China could never dream of.
