Forced Induction or N/A?

I have a Sport A/T P5 and i'm looking into giving it a little more HP. I'm caught in a N/A or turbo delima, i've read alot of bad things about the auto tranny blowin with turbos so i don't really want to go that route... if i did i would run about 6psi and 8psi in 3rd and 4th gear... or should i go N/A? if i went N/A i would be gettings CAI, headers, hi flow cat, cat back, jdm camshafts, jdm pistons, and cam gears. with the turbo its pretty much gauranteed that i'll get 167 WHP (flyin protege numbers) with 6psi, going the N/A route seems to be the more mysterious way to go HP wise since i haven't really seen any numbers with this set up... what do you guys think? fearing a blown tranny

Pirana ran up to 240 WHP on his auto... and that was at 12 PSI (I think, but cant remember) on a hiboost kit... it can be done, and certainly the auto can handle 6psi on this kit.

besides his car wasa BEAST when I got to ride in it. too bad he chopped it up and sold it, but I'm sure he could still answer your questions.

autos are fine with boost as long as you don't abuse it and run too much boost. If you run like 7psi on say a t3/t4 turbo, you will be fine. The only auto trannies that i have seen blow are because of too much boost or are abused and people won't admit it.

just a matter of time it give up, those shift point, band and servo aint design to handle much boost anyway. not to rain on your wedding but gotta be real about it.

turbo itself doesnt kill tranny, it's the additional power output kill the tranny, if you gettnig 300whp on turbo or just throttle, the stock tranny would break with neither one, turbo or not.

there's upgrade for auto tranny too, item like heat exchanger for atf, torque convertor, shift point computer hack, etc but i would just swap for a manual tranny and call it a day.

edit: those bolt on wouldnt get you no where near the turbo even a t25 with 7 lbs can walk a p5 with those bolt on.

300whp? and how much time are you talking about iam7head, i was boosting 7 psi on an auto tranny for about 3 months, and its still in perfect shape. 300whp? i don't think anyone on this website is pushing that much power on the fs-de. Swapping the manual tranny isn't worth it truthfully, its better to sell the car and buy a manual. Trust me i swapped to a manual its not as easy as it sounds.

I pull that number out of my arse, it just to make my point. sorry for the misinfo anyway.

YOu probably right about the tranny swap but again, i dont work on mazda much

I just noticed that essential speed has a turbo kit for auto trannies... around $2,800 USD, claim ~55whp gain at 6psi no intercooler, comes with 2.5 inch downpipe and hi flow cat, also a tranny cooler... does anybody have this kit or know about the build quality of essential speed products?

member markmurray77 had the essential speed stage 2 kit on his auto for something like 50,000 kms and had no problems. i've been at essential speed's shop and they make good quality stuff, and kevin, the owner is a great guy. i am in the process of buying mark's old kit...he's upgrading to something rediculous.

i thought alot about this too...but then decided to just go N/A...our cars werent meant for boost...and the money u waiste on getting 55 hp, u could have spent to get a new car that comes factory turbo (i.e. WRX, GTi, and such) IMO..i mean if your just looking for alittle more power, a couple bolt ons and the right tuning will make it feel fast/ and still keep u interested in your car...i mean come on u bought an auto protege, u obviously didnt buy it because it was fast... ;)

with intake, header, and catback, i barely pulled on a stock manual transmission from a 20mph roll. even with the sport shift at redline, the next gear up is so wide that i fell out of the power band.

sure i could use the money that i would spend on a turbo to trade in my car and buy another car with a factory turbo... but you know what. it wouldn't be a protege5. anyone who bought a protege5 didn't buy it because it was fast. they bought it because of the way they look. i'm not willing to trade in my p5 for another car... even if it is faster... (some exceptions) though a porsche would be nice :P

Besides there is no such thing as an Auto WRX, GTI etc.

Turbo will give you a broader powerband (if you keep a smallish turbo). N/A will probably be more reliable because N/A hp is expensive (laugh)

boost is fun, but you can't hide it too easily. Whoop someone's ass in an N/A car and they don't know what to say.
