I was bored checking the dealer inventory on the mazda webpage. Looks like every single mazdaspeed dealers in northen va has over 10 of them in stock and some even have 20. Whats up with that??? Are these cars just not selling well??? or did they make more then they can sell??? I'm sure the resale value just completely shot down because there cars are so easy to find and get a great deal on.

Maybe for you...
I bought one of two in a 400 mile radius. In fact, last time I was at the dealer in Memphis, they still had the other one! I believe the production numbers are correct.

We're just special up here in VA...

That's all.. Around the country, they are sparce..

Norther VA is redundant.. there are 5 mcdonalds in a 2 block radius.. ya know? Same concept ;)

When I bought mine, I checked the mazda usa webpage too. I founf one that I liked, call called the dealer listed. The delaer told me they didn't have that vin number, and that the inventory system on mazdausa.com is not accurate.

Maybe he was pulling my leg, maybe not.

MArketing for the car was not that great. MAzda rally didint pump the car much, except for the adds in Super Street. I persoanlly like it, cause it keeps in, mostly, the core community of mazda lovers, or enthusiasts.

Unfortunatly, as very well apparent here, there are a few that got into the hands of total fucktards, with no concept of tuning, or cars in general. :D

In NoVA there are more due to the 1) money 2) tuning scene.
I personally was really suprised to find a MSP at the dealer because I was just assuming they would all be snatched up but they had three on the lot including on used.

BTW- People generally make more money in this area hence the more willingness to pay 17-20k for a Protege.

In the Atlanta area the website says there were at least 25 at any given time in the Hennessey Mazda dealer(closet but still a drive), but taking a trip down there proves it was wrong. There was only two, locatted on the floor (yellow), and outside as a test drive car ( i passed on that one even thugh it was that lovely blue).

My dealer, about a mile and a half away from me, has about twenty of them, and the one a few more miles away has another five, then about ten more miles past that, another ten. =) I don't think they're terribly uncommon.

i know tysons mazda has least 20. when i bought mine, they had a whole roll of them in the lot.
And arlington has least 10 because they had about 6 on the lot and he said they have more in the backlot.

the delearship where I bought mine has had a titanium for about 4 months now that hasn't sold. I've gone if for service twice in that time and asked the guy who sold me my car if it was the same one, sure is.

Market saturation, etc.

It's a great and underappreciated car for sure. But Mazda overproduced for the demand with the 2003.5 version and now has hundreds (a thousand?) around the country that they have had to discount way below what they were originally intending I'm sure. There are other factors contributing to the lack of demand such as competitiion from Evo, redesigned WRX (ugly bugeye look eliminated, but still more odd looking than the Mazda) and new STi, Cooper S. I'm sure that comparison tests in Car and Driver, etc. with the Mazda ranking behind the likes of the Neon RT and Focus SVT have cost a few sales (to those who would ever consider owning one of those brands). What was an up and coming market for "factory compact tuner" cars when the 2001 MP3 was introduced has been saturated since then. I hadn't even mentioned the Civic Si, Sentra Spec V, or VW GTI until now so that's a total 10 models in this segment with prices in the high teens to $30K without even considering those potential sales pulled from the more "sporty looking" coupes like the Celica, RSX, Eclipse, etc. I'll get off my soap box now.
