08 CX-9 GT AWD, 04 Audi A4
I see that my original thread went off topic. We sold the 01 Millenia so we will be buying a CX-9, just have to find the right one.

We missed the 07 AWD but there are a few 08s coming up for auction on the 28th. Hopefully we will snag one of them up. We are after a GT with assist and rear DVD; there appears to be several at this particular sale!

This is first choice over the CX-7, but if we miss out on the 28th, we are back to square one.

I've been perusing all the talk over the 7 vs 9 and it's good reading. If I can get a 9 for the right price, I'll definitely go that route.

CX7 has a poorer reliability record than CX9 according to ConsumerReports.
CX7 is not much better than CX9 in MPG (only slightly better).
Those are two objective points I can think of right now.

... gonna speak up here...

Poorer reliability?? and 7 is faster, and virtually every mod available. Not too sure on your history, and if any of this matters to you. Just ran into this thread :)...

Actually, even the 07 CX9 is faster than the CX7. No offense intended. Just fact.

Now, if you compare it to other 5 seaters, like the CR-V, or Rogue, no contest.

Where are you getting your stats from? Everywhere I look, 7 is faster than 9. Either way, with the mods available, 7 can be stock MS3 fast... Depending on the launch, majority of times I beat my brothers stock MS3 (+intake)...

The reliability data is available on ConsumerReports, which is the most objective data one can get on reliability today.

In all honesty, some care about reliability, others don't.
I once owned a BMW 540iA. Many issues and costly repairs.
However, it put a smile on my face every time I drove it.

Performance wise, MotorTrend put
CX7: 7.7sec 0-60
CX9: 7.8sec 0-60
The difference is small enough.

IMHO, the CX7 appeals to the younger crowds.

My 2 cents:

1) The CX-9 is not faster than the CX-7. The CX-7 runs 2-3 tenths quicker through the 1/4 mile. Not a sizeable amount, but I wanted to clarify that.

2) Take anything you read in Consumer Reports with a grain of salt, it's not the gospel and their info is just as flawed as most other rating systems. However I do believe the CX-9 has had better overall reliability than the CX-7 and just about every other SUV in its class.

3) IMO the CX-9 is a better overall family vehicle. However it is $10k more for a new one over the CX-7.

If I was looking at used ones and the price was comparable I would probably buy the CX-9. If the price was still $10k apart I'd have to think about that.

I would however get the 2008 in either model and pass on the 2007's. In 08 they made the upgrades to the CX-7 so you could run regular gas and most of the bugs were worked out. The 2008 CX-9 of course upgrades to the 3.7L engine. I've driven both. There is nothing wrong with the 3.5L in the 07, but there is no denying the 3.7L is better.

It depends one who you ask, obviously. My statement was based on the comparisons of 07's from several sites and magazines. Since their numbers showed an 07 CX9 being a hair faster than an 07 CX7, I assumed an 08 or 09 3.7 would be even faster. I admit, though, that I am not familiar with any changes that may have been made to the 7.

It's still pretty close, which is impressive. The argument over "which to buy" is a little silly, however. They are a lot more different than they appear, and target a different demographic. I hope no one thought I was bashing the CX7. I think it's a great little 5 seater with more style and function and performance than it's competitors.

Wow, lots of passion on the 7 vs. the 9. Both are great vehicles and I am not concerned about reliability really. I have owned many Mazdas; my current 626 has 154K on it. We keep cars a long time.

This is a "used" 08 that we would be buying wholesale. It's actually a dealer demo from a bankrupt dealer, has just over 4000 miles on it. Sticker around 39-40 I'm sure. It's got GT Assist, BSM, Towing, Rear entertainment system. Black on black; beautiful vehicle.

I have only driven the CX-7; my wife drove the 7 and the 9. Both have their place, but if I can get a slightly used 9 for the same price as a brand new 7, I am going for the 9. We're both 30 with two kids so don't *need* the 3rd row, but we regularly haul around the kids' friends, dogs, etc, so the extra space will be very welcomed. Plus there's usually a stroller in the back.

Yes, they are both good vehicles in their own way. Price and needs will come into play there.

I agree this really isn't worth debating, but the CX-7 averages about 15.7-15.8 in the 1/4 mile in mag testing. I saw one that was 15.5 and one that was 16.0, but most are in the high 15 sec area. The 07 CX-9 was considered about a 16.3 sec vehicle while the 3.7L generally runs 15.9-16.0. Again not a big difference and no one buys these to drag race.

Wow, lots of passion on the 7 vs. the 9.

Not sure how the posts are coming across, but I don't really feel the passionate debate. We're just trying to provide you with the pros and cons of both so you can make an educated decision.

I own the CX-7 and I'm telling you to buy the CX-9 unless there is a large price difference, than it requires a little more thought.

When I bought mine I was buying new. The CX-9 wasn't quite out yet and was $10k CDN more money. Combine that with the fact that I didn't really need the extra room and that's why I bought the CX-7.

We loved our 07 CX7 AWD Sport. It was nice. A little gas thirsty in the gas price hike of 06-07 and 08. Wasnt real pleased at the pump but didnt buy it not knowing that. The back seat wasnt as roomy as I thought it would be and as mixed emotions were involved we decided to let it go for a 07 mazda 5 which is hands down our favorite between the two. Also, just for giggles I had the oportunity to go a couple lights to light against a CX9 and he was no where to be seen at launch but would start to pull up around 55 MPH (no speeding was involved, we would just go to the 65 mph speed limit as fast as we could).

I get what you mean about the room. The cargo space for the CX-7 really beats the CX-9 IF and only IF all the seats are erect.

But the CX-7 back seat didn't seem especially roomy with our two car seats. Bear in mind we have a 99 626 and had an 01 Millenia, so I know how things can be cramped.

The CX-9 feels like a limosine with its sliding middle row of seats and huge rear doors.

Just gotta hope this thing goes for about $28K or less at the auction. One week to go...
