Fog Light Switch Wiring

Can anyone make sense of how the fog light switch operates? I would like to use it to switch on my Prosport gauge backlight, but I can't make sense of how to wire it up.. everything I've tried has failed. I have the amber/white series gauges and all I want to do is use another stock fog light switch to turn on the white backlight.

Is this possible or is the stock fog light switch too goofy and complicated to accomplish such a simple task?

I'm about to try messing with this again soon, anyone have any insight or suggestions? I just want it to operate like a regular switch to turn on the backlight on my gauges, nothing fancy.

i have a diragram to wire the fog switch up for anything,, just need to find that paper with it as soon as i do i will message you with it hopefully it will help you,,

Anyone have any input about this? I'm sure someone has figure out how to wire up the fog switch for all sorts of stuff, otherwise they wouldn't always be getting snagged so fast from the part-out threads..

here is the wiring diagram for the fog lights, including the switch. the connector has four wires - two of them are used for the switch illumination, and the other two are a simple on-off switch. hope this helps.

I have that same diagram, and was staring at it blankly for a while last night but it doesn't tell me anything.. I dunno how to read the damn things lol. Besides, isn't the wiring of the P5/MP3/MSP fogs different from the regular sedan wiring? I just remember the "always on fogs" mod being different between the two, or maybe I'm wrong.

Either way, thanks for the help Nik.. sorry I'm an idiot when it comes to wiring schematics, but they make no sense to me.

ok, here's the interpretation...

on the back of the switch is a connector with 4 wires.

the "white-blue" (W/L) and the "light green-black" (LG/B) wires are for the switch illumination when you turn the lights on. you do not need to concern yourself with these wires, unless you want the switch to light up at night.

the "blue-yellow" (L/Y) and the "red-white" (R/W) are for the switching contacts. these are the wires that you want to connect to the gauge illumination wires.

the wiring diagram shows you an image of the switch connector (second from the left on the bottom of the sheet) to help you figure out which pin is which on the switch.

I was actually trying to do this exact thing to mine...good thing I found this thread. Im trying to find a way to integrate the dimmer switch in as well, but not too sure if ill need it once I get the switch to work.

edit: so here is my understanding, all you would need to do is tap into the L/Y wire, run it to the L/Y pin on the switch, then run a wire from the R/W pin to the illumination wire on the prosport guage. yea...I think thats it

if you already have the stock fog switch controlling the stock fogs, you just need to tap the illumination wires.

well I dont have Fogs, so i just pulled the stock switch out and put in a blank...but i just edited my post above with my solution...I think that would work

yup, that will work. if you have the stock dimmer switch still down there, tapping that for illumniation will work too.

So does the L/Y wire provide both power and ground then? That doesn't make much sense, but it seems like your method should work, I'll try it out and let you know.

Thank you guys for the help!

do you have a wiring diagram for the gauges?

no the L/Y is just power, from the headlight switch.
I believe the illumination wire on the prosport guages is just a signal wire, whenever it sees voltage on the wire it switches over to amber, white, or the other color.

Unfortunately.. this didn't work. Any other suggestions?

Ok, so here's the problem. In order for my gauges to light up following the above wiring, the parking lights have to be on and the fogs have to be off. Not exactly what I was hoping for. I'd really like to be able to illuminate the gauges independent of the parking/fog/headlights.

Do I just need to tap power for the switch from a different source? Maybe the ignition?

I should also maybe confirm exactly what I'm trying to do here. I would like to use a second OEM switch to control the gauges, while leaving the stock switch in charge of the fogs. Maybe I didn't make the clear from the beginning. Thanks again all.

yea, i forgot the fogs had switched power. You would need to tap into a constant 12v source, or just a reg acc. 12v like for the radio or cig lighter

So tapping into the ignition solved it, I can't believe this was so easy. I swear I tried all the combinations possible on the switch and it didn't work, but I guess I missed this one.
