F'n Road Noise!!!

Man, the road noise on these tires is driving me ******* crazy! I just passed 20k miles, never race the car, and the stockers are almost fried. It seems like they're even starting to wear faster! The road noise is almost unbearable at highway speeds, and when slowing down from about 30-5 mph. I've decided on Goodyear F1 GS-D3's for replacements, but it will be another month before I can afford them. This is driving me crazy!!

Sorry, just had to vent.

This is something that many people complain to me about while test driving all Mazdas...but it's never something I really notice.

I feel you on that. My friend was on the cell phone and people on the line always ask what all the noise is. They are pretty loud tires.

I've done some reasearch on tirereack.com as to the noise levels and I don't remember these being that great. They have pretty good stick though.

Proteges are real light on sound insulation. On the bright side, this keeps them from being pig heavy like a VW Jetta, part of why the guy with the Jetta will see nothing but taillights on a windy road- if he can get close enough to see them at all.

What pisses me off also is not just the noise, but everytime I have people with me, I get the "Damn, man, what's that noise?" question. I've had to explain it at least 12 times in the last two weeks.
(They do stick like a mother, though!)

I also say turn the radio up. Try driving it with Bridgestone Blizzaks on it all winter. Its about 3x more tire noise.

I dunno about you, but 2960lbs is pretty damn heavy. I had my MSP weighed with a nearly full tank of gas, and other wise empty interior. 2700 is getting light, but 2800+ is "heavy"

And yes, the OEM potenzas are horribly loud. I thought some of it was exhaust drone until i got some proxes4, they are incredibly quiet.

noisy tires

I never really heard it...radio up too loud. But yeah, my tires started to wear really bad at 20K miles...kept 'em till around 27k though. I'm completely through my second set now too, and I don't race.

Cheap fix is to buy a couple of cans of Rocker Panel Asphalt and spray it inside the wheel wells. It cuts down on the noise by about 30%. I got it from Wal-Mart for $5 each.

Noisy tires means they are gripping! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrip!

They don't have to be that loud though. I had my radio off cause I was listening for any weird noises and the tire noise is unreal.

my Semperit SNOWS are quieter than the 10k stockers... but the stockers stick when warm and the Semperits stick when cold (and drive better - quieter and less tramlining).

Yep, I've got 3/4 saved toward my new tires. I'm driving like granma. Oh, and I'm also getting crazy wheel hop now just barely taking off.

Don't get the BFG kdw2's then. They are pretty loud, cause of the aggressive tread. I have a feeling the Goodyears will be loud as well. Usually those "V" tread patterns are louder than the others.

Well, I had actually planned on the Goodyear F1 GS-D3's. It rains constantly here, and they are rated excellent for wet AND dry traction.
