FMIC and airbox installed at BEGi

oh nice begi rocks! I've had a begi fmic for a while now and she never gives up. Begi designs very efficient flowing cores ftw

So then how would the radiator get air if the IC is in front??? Also what happens to the TMIC?

Just trying to clarify, new to modding my turbo world.

The FMIC is just like a radiator only for air not liquid. Air passes through it and consequently still hits the radiator. Maybe the rad will be a little warmer from this but it surely shouldn't affect driveability.

The TMIC is completely removed and new piping is routed to the FMIC core as shown in the pictures.

Um...that didnt' really answer my question if that was directed to me???

No, not directed at you, just a general statement on the differences between TMIC and FMIC if anyone it thinking of making the switch.

Air still gets to the radiator after it passes through the intercooler. Ususally cooling efficiency of the radiator is not greatly reduced because of the FMIC.

The TMIC is gone, and the piping is rerouted to the FMIC.
This is pretty beneficial because you could get a CF hood to reduce all the weight the stock hood is adding because of all the ducting to the TMIC

Thereby lowering the center of gravity of the car and hopefully improving the handling at least a little bit.

Hasn't there been some speculation that the hood being heavy actually helps load the front wheels, therefore making handling a little better?

I don't buy it, but could be

any extra weight that high up is going to hurt your handling unless your going in a straight line. if you want more traction then you have to learn how to use the power at hand. There are so many variables when it comes down to it...tire size, wheels, trans ect. the best handling car bar none for the price would have to be the lotus elise exige s.

(drinks) i think fmic is stupid on a car tuned for tmic.....a hood scoop would be a better investment than a fmic in my opinion...plus i heard that fmic is best if ur getting serious numbers... like 350+ to the wheel

Why do we need a hood scoop? When we already have air ducts that pass air to our factory IC already, and also passes air to the battery box as well. Its very functional, there are 2 ducts in the grill that go straight to the IC. Just wondering what the purpose of a hood scoop would be since we have the air ducts???

FMIC are very good when it comes to better airflow, but like mentioned before the longer the pipes = more lag. Our cars spool up very fast as is, maybe with a bigger turbo the FMIC would be beneficial.

WRX's and STI's that keep the factory turbo and just upgraded their TMIC got better dyno numbers that ones w/ FMIC's. I know becuase my friend went both ways and regreted selling is upgraded TMIC and wished he didnt get the FMIC.

Also its more stealthy with upgraded TMIC..(rei)

Something else to consider...

The MazdaSpeed MX-5 that I recently traded in for my MS3 was the guineau pig/prototype car for BEGI's Intercooler upgrade kit for the MSM. I honestly haven't looked closely at my MS3's TMIC yet, but the stock MSM FMIC had plastic end caps and, IIRC, Corky said that the stock intercooler was loosing something like 1 PSI of boost as measured by the sensors he installed during testing (one sensor measuring boost before the IC and one measuring boost coming out of the IC).

If our TMIC's also have plastic end caps (which I really hope they don't, being on top of the engine and all), then there could likely be some free boost to be gained just by going with a higher quality (all aluminum core and end caps) TMIC or FMIC.

TMIC's are new to me, so I don't know about this business of TMIC's being the way to go with 350+ HP, but Corky knows his stuff, so unless the FMIC was just a special demand of the OP and not Corky's recommendation, then I'd take go with Corky's rec's any day over pretty much anyone else I know.

Unless anyone else here has written a book on the subject. :) http://tinyurl.com/2ejsjz
