FM Turbo Protege Dyno!

We have 93 here in the panhandle.

We do have a few Air Force bases here though, I wonder if I could put aviation fuel in my car :D j/k

So what type of fuel delivery is the Mazdaspeed Protege using? Acording to C&D they are using "A revised visteon engine-mamagement program" to increase fuel flow. Does this mean a reprogrammed ECU with stock fuel pump and injectors?

Yes, that would be sufficient to provide extra fuel for less than 7 psi.

I see...well if it's good enough for Mazda to warranty for 50,000 miles, it's good enough for me. I'm looking forward to my P5 and then a turbo kit (once wedding is paid for) :)

I know this is a bit off topic but:

According to Corky, the MP3's advanced timing shouldn't be a problem at all. All newer cars have a knock sensor, and if knock is detected, timing will retard accordingly.

As far as the feul issue goes:

I have no idea wha'ts going on. I've heard from BEGI that they were going to add the pump to the kit, and then that they might add it to the kit, and then that they don't beleive the MP3 will need a new pump but the P5 might?

Is there any difference in the feul psi int he MP3/P5?

Yes, the Protege has a knock sensor. It can be used to pull timing in case of knock. However, you shouldn't be relying on the knock sensor all the time. It's got a limited range of authority, and it really should be there as a safety backup in case something goes wrong. Corky tried to do the same thing for the 99+ Miatas :)

Corky lives in the land of low altitude and good gas. Up here, doing nothing more than swapping the ECU on our P5 for an MP3 one was enough to cause audible knock on the road. That's what kills engines in the long run. We're also seeing some interesting things in our P5 as we run a wideband O2 sensor on the street that may affect the final kit.

What I would recommend is let us figure it out. Making daily calls or asking the same question over and over won't get it answered. Once we know the final answer - and nobody does yet - we'll let you know.

Keith

So you got your wideband kit hooked up in the Protege 5 now?? Is that the one you recieved the day I was there?

Cool deal...Is it telling you different things than the one you ran on the dyno??

The street is a different environment. It's giving us more information than we saw on the dyno. More information once some conclusions have been reached....

Keith

Cool deal...More information leads to more conclusions which ends up in a better engineered product.

Sorry Spoolin and you Miata visitor guy for not answering your questions, I got surgery last week and I'm just now in the condition that I can use the computer...

anyway, I'm not sure I exactly where the pump is but I figured you would know Spoolin, I'm pretty sure it's right off of 95 on some major street, I think the one you would use to get to the track..

Oh, and I've seen a couple of Citgo's around here (is that what they are called?) one on 441 I think near Grand Prix maybe? and one somewhere near the beach, they both pump 94 octane.

hehe sorry I am not too good with directions, I am only ending my first year of driving and I'm getting better but you know...it takes time to learn your way around.

FMProtege Turbo Kit

I have to say I am very impressed with the FM Kit. With the very limited parts and the use of all factory cats is quite amazing that at 6 pounds you could pull 191 torque with a 2.25" exhaust. All you other members out there that diss the kit because of lack of hp shame on all of you.

I admit Spooling has the most power and torque but he has no cats, 8 injectors, link engine management, better turbo, 3" exhaust all the way through, and etc.

The FM Kit only uses a rising rate fuel regulator, dont know how they use it on the returnless fuel system we have but thats it. Stock ecu management, stock injectors, stock pump, stock cats.

Completely emissions legal for those who have emissions. This kit has SO MUCH POTENTIAL. You remove all the cats with 2.5" or 3" downpipe and exhaust, upgraded walbro 255lph fuel pump, hardwire an s-afc or e-manage, and you push 200hp at wheels with about 220torque tuned properly.

It already pushes 191 at 3200 rpms, whats that mean 1st gear useless, but in a roll in second gear holding rpm at 3000 and flooring it watch out V8

So to conclude guys at FLYIN MIATA I applaud and appreciate your time to develop this kit and continue R&D, may you reach 200hp under 8psi of boost. Wagon with 200hp and 220 torque =
WHOLE LOT OF FUN

Soon to be boosted once you guys figure out the fuel

Omar,
Thanks for the kind words. As an FYI, the Protege's do have a return line on the fuel rail, making it easy for us. Not sure why the Protege uses a return system and the Miatas returnless...

Not much to report at the moment. We've been busy with Miata stuff...
