Flip out screen location

I'm thinking of addng a video screen to my 2003 protege es. I want to keep the factory radio, so that limits my location for a in - dash monitor. Has anyone put one put one under the ashtray location? It looks like a din size. If any one has a idea of a place even if it's just for a monitor feel free to comment or send pictures. The idea is to hide it or make it portable for theft purposses. (shrug)

Its not a DIN size. It gets smaller both vertically and horizontally as it gets deeper meaning you would have to cut out all of the inside.

I'm not sure what you want to do here. Most screens that pop out of a single DIN location are also head units which would eliminate the need for your factory system. They also need plenty of space to pop out and your shifter may get in the way. Additionally, you would want the screen higher up for viewing pleasure.

The best solution would be to get a double-DIN unit and install it in the factory location. Then take apart the face of the factory unit and create a false-face-plate to stick over the screen, held in place with velcro possibly. You will need to glue all the buttons together making the factory unit useless but if it hides your $2000 investment...its worth-while. You can get a factory unit at a junk yard if you don't want to ruin yours.

I've seen just plain flip out screens on Ebay for cheap and was thinking of installing one of those. Maybe I can use your advise in a different way. I can buy the screen just for viewing and than install a seperate head unit for the system. I can than just find or make a plain black face plate in the screen location. I just hate to get rid of the factory in dash 6 cd changer. Have you seen screens mounted anywhere up front and portable too?

I have never seen a "portable" screen. If you don't have a moonroof you could put one in the headliner. You could remove your passenger-side-airbag and have it pop out of the dash. There are endless possibilities but never have I seen a portable screen.
