Flex Pipe?

:
Protege5
Last weekend I got an MX6/Probe 4-2-1 header from Pick and pull for 15 bucks. Wasn't planning on running a header, but for that price I couldn't refuse.

It's a little different than a Protege header, I'll have to weld another 02 bung onto it and figure something out for the EGR tube, and I will need to shorten the mid pipe by 6 or 8 inches.

Does the P5 not have flex pipe? I couldn't find one while measuring the stock exhaust. If I do away with the factory J-pipe and spring flange deal, will an aftermarket flex pipe need to be installed?

theres a thread somewhere here that explains what needs to be done to install the 4-2-1. and exhaust shop should be able to do everything you need. install O2 sensor bung and the EGR tube needs to be re aligned and just cut some pipe to make it fit. that's about it.

No flexy stuff I can see...

(P.S... Prune juice works great if you're bung'ed up.... lol)

Taco Bell and copious amounts of Busch Light have always done the job for me.

The spring loaded coupler on the J pipe is where Mazda intended the pipe to flex. I'll be cutting that out and installing an aftermarket flex pipe.

I got some pieces yesterday and would like to fit it together tonight. We'll see how it comes together.

Can anyone tell if these are stainless? They are very hard cutting.

I got her in there... The welds aren't the prettiest but they're strong.

I still need to finish welding in the second 02 fitting, and then weld the mid pipe on after that, and finally get the header installed with the gasket and button everything back together.
