flat spots on tires

My protege is wearing the hell out of its tires! Continental contiextreme in size 215/45-17. Passenger side is worse then the driver side and almost bald with 25k miles on the tires. just noticed today that certain spots on the tires have smooth sections while other spots are near full tread. Any ideas?

driving style could cause this. Locking up wheels, or the vehicle sitting for to long in one spot on the tires. Not enough information about the vehicles use, how you drive it etc.

Its a 99 protege. Lowered 3 inches. Had alignment done. Camber is moderate at 1.2 degrees. Daily driver. No sliding or anything like that. Ocassional burnouts but that wouldn't cause a spot on the tire but the whole thing. Inside and outside edges are the worst but its like a quarter of the tire is bald on all 4.

Using the wrong air pressure can do something like that. Usually when you bald spot the inside and outside without the center wearing as much your under inflating. Also if your balding the center of the tire and the outside are wearing slower than you are over inflating. If your pressure are perfect and the wear is even inside and outside I would think it could be poor tire construction.

It was weird. Ill show two pics of the same tire...here's a bald spot on the driver front tire. 20110412164843.webp.....And here is another shot just 90 degrees away on the same tire...20110412164849.webp let me add that the build date on these tires was 3/06 soo the rubber was getting a little older and around 30k miles but that's really not much for a wear rating of 340. I got yokohama s drives in a 215/45-17 today vs my old 40 series. Hopefully its a smoother ride!

And I should have said my struts have about 10k miles on them and have recently been out of the car and are in great shape mechanically. Thanks for the input though guys. Ill keep a close eye on the wear of my new tires
