Fitment questions, again.

Hey guys. Been a long time since I have been to the tire section of this board. Thought I was all set, then the spouse decided to change her mind again. I was going to get OZ Supperleggera's put on the pro5, but after a month or so of deliberation, the wife decided that we should go another route. I love this car, but when she gave me the "maybe in a few months or so" speech about whether or not I could get a MSP or a new 6, I decided to start making this car more for her.
But ok, now on to the questions. After photochopping about 40 sets of rims onto our car, she has finally decided that she likes the Focal F5 wheels. They look kewl to me, so I figured I would see what I could find out. All I could find was a 17X7 with a +42mm offset. After reading the fitment recipie, it appears that these will work, just wondering what size tires I should go with. Never been real clear on the difference between 215's and 205's, so any help would be appreciated.
Oh yeah, the car is not lowered, but it may be in the future, depending on whether or not the car remains mine or the wife's. Thanks fellas!

215s are 10mm wider than 205s.
The number corresponds to the width of the tire.
So a tire that's 215/40-17 would be:
215mm wide, with a 40mm sidewall, that fits a 17 inch rim. :)

Very close, eggnatey. The middle number is actually a percentage or 'aspect ratio', so a 205/45-17 would be a tread of 205mm with a sidewall of 92mm, 45% of 205. It's like that for all tires. so a 215/45-17 would be 215mm tread with a sidewall 97mm tall. (96.75, but is anyone that anal?)
Hope that helps.

oops! Thanks for the correction.(owned)

EDIT: now that I think about it, 40mm is a seriously LOW PRO tire!
heh heh

For those that are used to reading things in inches and not mm here's a good breakdown of tire widths and sizes.

195/50R16 stock for P5 = 7.68" wide x 23.7" diameter
205/45r17 stock for MP3 = 8.07" wide x 24.3" diameter
205/40R17 = 8.07" wide x 23.46" diameter
215/45R17 = 8.46" wide x 24.61" diameter
215/40R17 = 8.46" wide x 23.77" diameter

I think with a low offset wheel (ie 42mm or less) that the 215 won't fit properly on the rear of the P5. There is an issue with the rear struts being closer to the wheel than on the sedans. You may want to measure the distance from the outer most part of the strut/spring to the face of the hub. Just take that measurement and add the wheel/tire width to it and you can get a clearance from that. BTW 42mm = 1.65 inches and 45mm = 1.77 inches.

You're passing up Superleggeras for Focals????? ummm okaaayyy ....

If you only have a +42 offset you should run a 205 tire.

Thanks for the help fellas. NO, I am not passing up the Super's, the wife is. I know I know, the OZ's are much better, but can't budge an already stubborn pita ya know!

stock rims!

I need new tires and was wondering if I could get 205/45/16 or 215 possibly or/and if I would have to go w/ a lower profile or what. 215/40/16 or is that to wide????? any help please. I have the eibach prokit to!!!!

Thanks,
Matt

215/45-17 fit on my P5, but my rims have plenty of offset.
My new tires are 205/40-17 and the difference in road noise is BIG!
If you've still got the stock stereo, Id say get some 205's.

Also, I'm not sure if 45 will rub with the springs or not, but my car with 40's is begging for some Eibachs. Wheel Well City, and my rims are 17"

hey remdoc.....the +42's will work...but only if you are going to go with the 205's, especially if you plan on lowering in the future...

if you want to go with the 215's, like I did, you will need at least a +45 to be absolutely sure not to rub with the P5.

and THAT is what the recipe richie posted says..... :{D

richie is THE MAN.

Thanks for the help again Nuke, as well as others. I looked at Rishie's recipie before I posted this, but just wanted to make sure I didn't screw anything up. Once again, you all rock!

Yup make sure it's a 205/40/17.

With regards to tires on stock wheels. The stock wheels are not wide enough IMO for a 205/45/16. I believe it has a negative affect on the sidewall integrity. Plus it doesn't look right to me.

I'd go with the stock size or upgrade to a 205/50/16. That should be a better aspect ratio for the wheel width.

Good Info... somebody please let me know, If I tried to put a 205/45-17 on a 17x7.5, Would it fit? or am I stuck with 17x7's?

cool
thanks Rishie...

How exact is your fitment recipe?

I have my eyes on a 17x7 42 offset and i have 205/45 at my house right now... do you think i'll have issues?
