The family and I just got back from our first trip to the snow this last weekend, and we didn't have any problems. We went up to Truckee on Friday and it snowed pretty heavily on Sunday and Monday. It was pretty slow going on the way back down HWY 80, but we didn't have any traction problems that I could tell. I will admit that I was pretty nervous on the way home because a) it was my first time driving in snow, and b) I had not heard great things about the snow performance of our Goodyear Eagle RS-A tires.
I do have some quick observances:
1. Like many other threads on the subject I found it strange not knowing when the AWD system was "kicking in". I'm very into knowing what's going on and would have felt better if there was some indication that the system was working.
2. I used manual mode when decending steep inclines, and that worked really well. Even on steep decents it would never upshift to 2nd gear. Very nice.
In general I was quite impressed, even though I have no clue how much we "taxed" the AWD and our tires. As I said I wish the system would let me know that it was sending power to the rear wheels or that it was in "snow mode". Curious, anyone know if a Scangauge will report what "mode" it's in or how much power is being sent to the rear tires? That type of thing seems like something the computer would know.
