First Oil Change: Mazda says 7,500 miles, dealer says 4,000

My first oil change (free) was at 3,534 miles and only because it was 6 months. I don't put many miles on it. As long as the warranty is in force I'll change at 5,000 miles or 6 months. In my case it will be 6 months. I don't want to give Mazda any ammunition in case something goes wrong.
After the warranty I'll increase to 7,000 or 9 months.
Set your oil change maintenance to "Flexible" and you can change your oil once per year with your low miles or up to 10,000 miles if you drive a lot by using Mazda oil. You won't have any warranty issue as this is Mazda approved OCI.

I have a 2015 CX-5 that I don't drive much. I have had a little over a year with only 1300 miles. Thoughts on the first oil change. I know the manual says 6 months but I only had around 500 miles at that point and feel like I need to change soon but not sure based on mileage. I've always used Mobil 1 Synthetic and would like to continue with that. Thanks for the info!

I put on at least 500 miles a week sometimes! (boom06)

I would change it at the time intervals specified. You might not have driven that many miles, but the oil could have lost it's effectiveness over that time.

I did my 1st oil change at 1000 miles. The thinking was everything is brand new and maybe not perfectly settled in yet. Maybe there's still some grease from assembly at the factory. Maybe there's some microscopic metal shavings from breaking in the brand new engine. I dunno...Maybe I'm just paranoid, lol.

I did my 1st at 1k then went to the 5k interval after that.

100% agreed. This is how I handle.

Dealer said the first oil will accumulate a lot of metal bits due to the break-in. For years I've read both sides to this story.

What's your opinion?

Thanks.

I say 1000 miles for the first oil change, then max allowable by the manual on synthetic while in warranty. After the warranty, I run 15k synthetic oil 10k miles. Most of my miles are suburban.

I did my first oil change at ~4700 due to time constraint and knowing I wouldn't get to it later. I plan to keep at the 5k-7500 interval, thought my next oil change will probably be at 10k due to the harsher winter/towing.

I took mine in for the first oil change at about 6,300 miles. When the dealer put one of those "next service stickers" on my windshield I noticed they merely added another 6k miles to my present mileage for when my next appointment was due.

I used to stick with mileage or time durations, whichever came sooner. But with the advancement in oil quality I don't hold to the 6 month timeframe anymore.

hi! your dealers "diddle" you on "first oil chang" as we do.))) But our people are changing the oil themselves (~ 2000-3000km \ 1500mills) but maintenanse
accordance with Owner's Manual (15000km / 12months).
