Finally TSX out 5 in!

TSX was fun (and leased). But I wanted something that got good gas mileage and could make runs to IKEA. Also got tired of premium gas. And I save $90 a year on insurance.

I'd like to drive a TSX sometime... while in the RSX-S, the engine was probably relatively linear power, I'm guessing the added weight made it have a peaky pull as you rev 'er up? Understandably some people may not like this, but I think it's more exciting to drive a car that pulls more the higher you rev it... torquey V6 cars (ie, domestics) are so flat across the powerband that they're just not as fun to drive. This is one reason I like the 5, no it's not fast no matter how you cut it, but while it's downright sluggish below 3K, above 4k it really gets frisky. JMO.

I spanked a TSX on the the freeway the other night. TWICE!!

First I kept on his butt on the freeway on-ramp and I would have passed him if there was another lane.

Then we did a 65-100+ drag race and I passed him coming from 2 car lengths behind before I hit the brakes. That's when he retreated to the slow lane to hide in shame.

I'm sure most of it was because I was the better driver, but it's not the first time I've spanked a 'sports sedan' and it certainly won't be the last!

The RSX-s and the TSX do not have the same motor. The RSX uses a 2.0, the TSX uses the 2.4. The TSX motor is essentially the base accord/CRV/Element motor with a head similar to the one on the RSX-s.

The combo = high HP and decent TQ.

The TSX has 45 more HP, more torque, and weighs a few hundred pounds less than your 5. He probably wasn't racing you.

Thanks for the catch... could've sworn it was the K20 but alas you're correct.

I have a weird brain. It stores technical data about automobiles like a supercomputer. 99% of the stats I read on cars/trucks sticks in my head for years. I read 5-6 car mags/month, plus online automotive news. I've been doing this for 15 years. It's all there in my head.

I know it sounds crazy but it's true. I wish I could say I remembered everything else this well. I can't even remember the names of my neighbors and I've met them many times.

no I believe it. don't have a specialty in cars but I know so much random useless s*** it's not funny. if only the stuff I knew actually ever mattered in any situation other than yelling at the tv when jeopardy comes on.

No he wasn't racing me. He was already butt hurt because he couldn't out run me on the on-ramp. So then he tried to block me in the HOV lane.

I got a run on him from behind and there was nothing that his 52 more hp, 16 more torque or 76 less pounds could do to prevent me from passing him.

Like I said, it was the driver that beat him.

My TSX power was just enough...never overwhelming or "wow"....just enough. I had the 5 SPD auto so getting the RPM's high enough to get to the power was annoying. I liked the car for the most part.

I've considered picking one up for a daily driver. Definitely a 6spd though.

I'm not trying to compare apples-to-apples of course, but it is something that noted when I got the Mazda5 (compared to my Honda Civic daily commuter). For the Honda I needed to go above the 4500RPM range to feel the "punch", while in the Mazda5, while not comparing to a V8 torque the "punch" response, I just need to get to the 3000-3500RPM range, not bad for a 4cyl family hauler...

the 2.3 has a very broad, flat torque curve.

Very true. My old 94 Mercury Sable had loads of low end torque, to the point that flooring it at a stoplight would instantly smoke the tires, but completely ran out of breath at about 4000 RPM. MY current 01 Toyota ECHO has a 1.5L 4 that need to hit probably 400 RPM and you feel the VVTi kick in. Because it weighs maybe 2000 lbs, that little engine scoots at high RPM.

The closest I have driven as far as powerband is my mom's 2001 Nissan Maxima V6. It have good power at any RPM. IT just has more power than the 5 if you push it hard. That's fine be me though, as the 5 is consistently turning decent mileage for the engine size (25 mixed, 29-31 Hwy)

the VQ30 is a fantastic motor. It's a PITA to work on though (most transverse v6's are). It's soooo smooth and linear, it's really one of the world's best ever motors. It's quite economical too. My maxima got 28MPG on the freeway.

(BTW, I think the black looks excellent - and back up those words - as my '08 is black too.)

Anyone have an idea why Mazda doesn't tint the rear windows? On most minivans that's pretty standard these days. I would think a micro van, with sliding doors and all, tinting would fit right in.

The only thing I can think of, is it might make the interior seem smaller - but I don't have tinted windows to do a comparison.

(Having come from a van with tinting, I quickly got the cargo cover when I really felt the stuff in the back seemed very easy to see.)

Great engine, but absolutely shoehorned in a Maxima! Too bad Nissan 4s of late seem to be really rough. My Grandpa had an old 510 wagon (Datsun) with the Nap-Z twin spark engine. That was a nice block there as well! Mazda has always seemed to have some smoothengines, that the 5 still doesn't pull as smoothly as my dad's 13B RX-7 rotary (street porting helps quite a bit)

I am pretty sure that the 5 has UV glass. No tint, but still UV protection. I am just not sure how much it helps. The reason that the 5 doesn't have tint is that it is certified as a Passenger Car (PC). In the US, the PC class can't have factory tint for whatever reason. Most Vans and CUV/SUVs are not classified as a PC and can therefore offer factory tint.

It's funny because the VQ30 evolved into the VQ35, which found its way into newer maximas, 350zs, G35s, etc....and the VQ35 is not nearly as smooth as the old VQ30. Apparently (I have not driven one), the VQ37 in the G37 coupe, is finally as smooth as the old 30.
