I picked up a 2007 CX-9 Grand Touring as a company car in August 2007. After 85000 miles I am now ready for a new car and here is my experience with the CX-9:
Configuration:
AWD, Moonroof/Bose, Trailer Tow, Roof Rails, Sirrius, Pearl White Mica, Tan interior.
Summary:
Overall I was really happy with this car. After 85000 miles, it feels and drives like new. No rattles or squeaks, no fluid leaks of any kind, no drive train or other issues of any kind, never had a Service Engine light. Dealer visits were mostly for regular maintenance. I personally like the styling and have gotten many compliments on the car. Im 63 tall and the seat fits me perfectly. I drive a lot of different cars in my job and was always happy to be back in the CX-9. The size was just right for our family of 4 with enough luggage room for longer trips. My wife likes driving in the car, but does not like driving it herself. She feels that the steering is too direct and requires constant input. This is one of the trade-offs of the sporty feel/wide low profile tires.
Likes:
o Styling
o Handling (so much better than other crossovers I have driven)
o Standard features (HID, Rain Sensing Wipers, 20 Wheels, etc)
o Diver seat comfort, no complaints from passengers either.
o Size is just right
o Reliability. 85K miles and it feels like a new car.
o Quietness of the cabin
o Audio system (except for Ipod interface)
o Bluetooth
o Rear A/C controls
o Keyless entry and starting. Hate that dealer has to change programming.
o Front brakes lasted 75K miles. My wifes Chrysler van barely made 40K.
Dislikes:
o Need for constant steering input. The car will drift (sometimes even veer) depending on road undulations. This did get better with different tires. I also had a CX-9 Sport rental once and with the 18 wheels, this seemed a lot better.
o OE tires are terrible (Bridgestone Dueler HL). Handling in dry conditions was good. Winter driving was terrible, only lasted 25K miles. Replaced with Eagle G/A. these were better in all aspects and lasted 45K miles. Current tires are Yokohama Prada Spec X. Big improvement on driveability. Cant comment on winter, but tread design looks promising.
o Lack of trip computer (added for 2008)
o Lack of memory for outside mirrors. Would also like to have auto-dimming on outside mirror.
o Ipod interface
o Passenger airbag setting. Airbag is inactive with my wife (105lb) in the passenger seat. I have never had this issue in any other car.
o Windshield wiper pattern on the passenger side. Since it is quite raked, the wiper on the passenger side only cleans about 50% of the area. Not an issue with short passengers, but I have found it annoying the few times I was in the passenger seat and the windshield was dirty.
Overall I would highly recommend this vehicle. Changes made after 2007 should make it even better.
