ok so love my p5 in the city with the short gears but ive been doing alot of highway driving lately and wondered if there were any trans that had a lower final drive or just longer gears in general, ive searched for a few weeks now and cant really find anything. i know my trans has 4.1.... something to 1 ratio, so my question is really what trans has a lower ratio for better highway driving. i was reading on the kl swap and seen some ppl used the msp trans with the mx6 bellhousing so i guess that could work the opposite too if a 626 or something has the gearing i want, so thanks in advance.

Yeah, I was just readin about changing 5th gear... Does anyone know the gear size of the stock 5th? I was reading on probetalk about them using one out of an escort or festiva for longer gears... Are any of those swapable?

Went through the faq and pm'd theman but got nothing so if anyone knows if its possible to swap 5th gear let me know, thanks

Try to find a manual transmission for a 98 or 2000 Mazda 626. The final drive is around 3.8. It's still the same transmission number (and this is the tranny that the 5th gear swap comes from)... but I don't know if it'll bolt right into your drive-axles or if you need fabrication.

My old 626 could hit 200 km/h in the mid 5ks... which is a hell of a lot better than the Proty with the 4.105:1 final drive.

ok i know this thread is pretty much dead... are we talking the 2.0 626? still want to do something like this, are they good trannys or is it going to go out on me all the time, want reliability but better ratios. thanks alot guys

Funny... I googled the 2.0 drive ratios before and got a 3.8 somewhere. Can't remember where, though.

At 200 km/h, my 626 would be showing between 5,500 and 5,800 rpm (probably closer to the latter). My Protege, at the same speed, is turning way over 6,000 rpm.

Never had problems with 626 synchros or gearbox. Personally, I think they might be stronger... or it might just be that the shift fork is better designed... (doubtful... at 60k miles, the 626 shifter flopped like a rubber dilly...) might be that the previous owner didn't whale on the car for the 60k+++ miles that he had it.

what year was your 626? i found a 626 info website that said the older 626s 93-97 or what not had lower 5th gears which would drop the rpms a ways... just wondering if it would be swappable(just 5th).....

Hmmm... can't find the info on the final drive anymore... I probably got the final drive of the AT and MT mixed up all those years ago... Apparently final drive is similar to the Protege.

Mine was a 98, but it was a 93-97 model. Yes, apparently you can swap 5th without swapping anything else... it's good for dropping a couple hundred rpms at cruise. The rest of the difference in the case of the 626 is the taller tire sizes.

That car was a real slowpoke... 118 hp from 2 liters... but the torque profile (and clutch/flywheel) was much better than the Protege... you could cruise in 5th from very low rpms without the shaking you'd get with the newer, peakier FS-DEs.

ok now im trying to figure out what gear to swap... on probetalk they say you can swap out the fs-de 5th gear from the 626 to lower their gears and they also say using the festiva .69 5th gear lowers it even more... hmmmmm so anywho does anyone know a good mph to rpm calculator that i could figure out how low i would be running with the festiva 5th and the 626 5th? everyone i go on shows im running rpms im not with the stock setup... kinda thinking a .69 5th would be awesome for highway and gas mileage but dont want over kill. thanks alot for helping me figure this all out

thank god for google lol, figured everything out just need to make sure the festiva gear is swappable, got all the mph at rpms with stock, 626 5th, and a festiva 5th. niky your the man for helping me out, ill let you know how it goes

went to junkyard and no festivas....(bang) so found a newer style sedan escort that has .717 5th gear, went to pull it and dont have a fricken cordless impact to get it off.... trying to find one now so we will see when i get it off. ill let you know how that turns out. with those gears should be at 70 just under 3k rpms compared to 31ish, not much of a change but i figure i can get a few more mpgs out of it for $10 or so, it will pay itself off in a day for how much i drive. still would love a festiva gear but dont feel like searching the world for something like that
