Fiberglass Custom Sub Box

Ok, so I'm thinking about making a custom fiberglass box for my Kicker s10l5, which would be on the right side of my car in that little nook that goes in where the jack is hidden. I've read some other posts, and done some searching, and I was just wondering if you think this fiberglassing method sounds fine: I would be buying the mat and resin at the autozone near my house (together it all costs $10-20), then I would be laying tin foil all throughout the trunk of the car, covering everything so I make sure not to get resin on the car, then I would lay the fiberglass, and I would make the front flat with mdf board so I have a flat wall with the sub and it grille in it. Then I'd sand off the tin foil after doing several coats of the fiberglass and letting it dry (dries between coats too).

Let me know if you have any suggestions, or any pics of a p5 trunk with a similar box.

Thanks!

I'm going to my local boat shop. How much do you think the fiberglass mat and resin will cost for this one box?

You would be looking at abour 30-50 bucks total for all your materials, if you know what your doing.

If its your first time, your gonna spend more, because your not gonna be happy with the first one. (this is in most cases though)

General guess for first timers is 50-100$ to get it right. You need to do like 7 coats I think, to make it strong. And remember, fiberglass is strongest on curves, so places that are flat should be reinforced with MDF.

Hihosilva had a tutorial on how to do something very close to what you're looking to do. Do a search on his name and fiberglass, and you should be able to find it! Good luck!

Yeah, great thanks I also found the other link didn't work, and I have read the new link. Sounds good...and it also sounds like this guy spent a lot of money on his box...I definetily hope to spend under $80 on mine...it is only for one sub so I'll need less fiberglass mat and resin.

Thanks!

yeah, HH's page was down for a while, but someone else put it on there page:D it's a great how-to for fiberglassing;) and go to a local paint supply shop for fiberglass and resin. boat shops charge a lot, like walmart and autozone:( i pay $15 per gallon of resin, and they have a great selection of mat:D

Oh great, thanks! I saw some at autozone, and it looked pretty inexpensive! I think the resin was $10 for a quart or a little more solution resin, and the two kinds of mat were around $5 for what looked like a square yard of two in each pack. I guess I'll just go to autozone then since it's closest of all the shops to my house! Thank you so much to all of you who've helped me so far! I'll be sure to post pics when it's all finished! I hope to do it tomorrow, however I'm not sure if I'll have enough time (my neon interface controller is coming tomorrow).

Thanks!
