This is hard, too many categories of music to choose from. I'm just gonna list top 5 metal guitarists:
Dimebag Darrell - Pantera
Dave Mustaine - Metallica/Megadeth
Kirk Hammett - metalica
Zakk Wylde - Ozzy/Black Label Society
Eddie Van Halen - Van Halen

What the hell, i see no one is riding with the kind...

BBKING
Eric Clapton
Jimmy Page - Zepplin
Nancy Wilson - Heart
Frank Zappa
Robin Trower
George Harrison

AND THE BEST EVER
Chuck berry, he invented this s***

But in the type of s*** i listen to i am going to say Tom Morello, even though he uses a lot of effects, he can come up with the crazyiest stuff.

Did you mean Brian May?

GHOSTWHISPER - Nancy Wilson...
Nice choice!

I'll add a few more:
Robert Trujillo (bass) - Suicidal Tendencies/Infectious Grooves
Paul Gilbert - Racer X/Mr Big
Nick Drake - probably all time favorite acoustic guy

Whoever said Al Dimeola gets rep points. Another guitar genious that was unfortunately killed a while back...Micheal Hedges. If I remember correctly he won Guitarist Magazine's reader's poll for best Acoustic Guitarist of the year 5 years in a row and wasn't allowed to run anymore. He died in 1997 from a car accident.

yea... it's tough to list all the great players. but my favorites are:

Eddie Van Halen

Vivian Cambell - Dio/Def Leppard

Mathias Jabbs - Scorpions

Glen Tipton (I think that's his last name) - Judas Priest

What was that guys name from Extreme?

And since I was born and raised in Spain, almost all the flaminco/sevillianas guitarists.

Ronnie James Dio

Dio has rocked for a long, long time,
Now it's time for him to pass the torch.
He has songs of wildebeests and angels,
He has soared on the wings of a demon.

It's time to pass the torch,
You're too old to rock, no more rockin' for you.
We're takin' you to a home,
But we will sing a song about you.

And we will make sure that you're very well taken care of.
You'll tell us secrets that you've learned. Raow!
Your sauce will mix with ours,
And we'll make a good goulash baby.
Dio, time to go!
You must give your cape and scepter to me.
And a smaller one for KG.
Go! Go! Dio! Dio!

Kyle Gass is a kickass guitar player too.
