Fake Cat

So, my cat-less APEX DP is on order. Obviously there are some slight legalities to adding it to a street driven car. However, let's face it. Turbo car, more flow=more go. So, it is worth the risk. However, I would like to minimize that risk. We don't have emissions testing around here, but if your car appears to be modified when you go in for your safety inspection, you have to get a reconstruction permit, which equates to the car get a full body cavity search. That might be a little exageration, but they are gonna peek under the car.

My plan is to use a cat heat shield welded around the pipe to give the appearance of legitimacy. So, I was curious if anyone else has ever tried this before. Or, any tips that might help me in my not so moral efforts. Ok, Green Peacers, flame away.

Your plan to have the Heatshields welded on is a Good Start....

Altho a Straight piece of Pipe with just Heat Shields tacked to the outside isn't going to be Really Convincing especially if someone is being as Anal as you are stating...

You might want to Consider having them Flange the Straight Section of Pipe so it really appears to be a Bolted on Item.

Just a thought,

Mike

Outstanding, these are the kind of ideas I need to achieve my evil plan. Bwaahhh-ha-ha-ha-ha. Ummm.....cough. Seriously, good suggestion. The shield definitely has to be filled in a way that makes it appear to be a cat. Mabey a larger piece of pipe welded around to DP with a bead at each end. Then tack weld the shield on to that? Hmmmmm.....

High flow cat or a gutted cat- this way their is an entire shell their that will look right, not just a shield.

We used to gut cats and weld a pipe straight through it (sometimes you need to widen the opening on either end of the cat a little), but I'm just making this up... it's all a joke, really. My cars are always street legal, with all emissions devices intact.

just get a 3" or 2.5" OBX high flow cat, I have one, and it looks just like a cat, but boy, you can see right through that thing, it is NO cat. cheap too, on ebay

Hey guys, thanks for the ideas. I mean all those street legal ideas. Shame on all of you who would support a car not meeting those reasonable standards of the EPA. lol.

EPA is full of s***... they say one thing and drive their SUV to the next site they plan to conserve... then use the wood from trees a thousand yrs old to build their office buildings... EPA can kiss my ass

Hehe, my way is usually the monkey way... but this is what you come up with when you have to pass visual inspection and cannot stand the hollow echoing sound of a plain old gutted cat.

yeah, I've heard that you could just take a legalized cat from a car and just gut it with a screw driver. Thinking about it I realized that if someone were to do this for "Off-Road use only" that they might want to do it with a mask on and some eye protection.
Speaking of Off-Road uses, if someone were to be worried about restriction, they could probably use the cat from a larger vehicle (i.e. truck) to get the correct size.
:D tongue-in-cheek, anyone?

We actually used a railroad spike and mallet on my friend's Z28, he also has side pipes so the unfiltered gas comes in right at the base of the door.

Ahem, his car is a death trap.

Tongue planted firmly in cheek. Thanks for all the input. I'll let you know how it works out. On paper of course, because an upstanding member of the community like me would never actually do this. Hold on a second, remove tongue from cheek myself.
