Fair Price on a 2003 Protege5 with a blown engine?

The engine on my MP5 blew up. At this point I'm trying to decide if it's worth putting a new engine in or if I should try and sell it for someone else to do and put the money towards a newer toy. So my question to everyone is what a fair price would be to ask for the car as is and also what would be a good price for a good used engine? Here's the main points to the car:

It's an automatic with the 'slap stick' option.
Body had 131k miles.
Minor rust near the rear wheel wells.
Has moonroof and luggage rack.
Tinted windows.
Cloth seats.
Aftermarket Sony CD unit with USB and aux input.
Tires a bit past mid tread.
Front brakes good, may need rear brakes upcoming.

Thanks All!

Good Condition is about $3200 and Fair price would be about $2500 and both are running condition. You have to take into account the engine is blown after that and what it would cost to buy and install. I bought my MSP with a blown engine for way less than what fair price is but it just depends where you live and if you get a good deal.

If you wanted to put a new motor in you could for <$1000. What exactly happened to your motor?

Took me 8 weeks to find $825 motor w/ 120 k miles. $750 to install w/ timing belt & rear seal. $1600. Not factoring in paying for a different ride for that time. My 5 speed I still think was worth it, but not a good monetary move. Immediate access motors were double. Good luck

If you can install it yourself you could save yourself the install fee. I guess see what you can get for trade in value. Sorry about the p5 bro :/

I've been quoted as able to get a used engine with 83k miles and a 6 month warranty Installed for 2,500.

That is about an average price for the motor/labor, especially to have a "it works" warranty with it...

And you would be getting ***** by paying that much

Not really, not everyone has the "hookup" or "know how" to do the job...

In the present state though with blown motor, the car is only worth around $1000, possibly less depending on rust/paint...

1000? Sounds low-ball.Go to the Kelly blue book website, put in your info & deduct the engine replacement cost to see what a ball park figure on it "as-is" might be. I took a guess on "Fair" condition for that car as a runner and got 4 grand for a private party sale with 131,000 on the clock.Good condition was about $770 more.Zip code, options and condition will vary the price.Best of luck to you.

Looking at your pic and if the body is as clean as stated, lets not forget the strut towers if they are clean like the rest of the car to the right person $1500-2000 is a very fair price being as a clean MP5 is harder to find nowadays in clean condition. Engine's can be had from anywhere $300-$900 depending on your area and what you find, and then you are looking at install which is best if you are able to do it yourself but if not then you are at the mercy of your area shops. I would never pay more then $1500 installed for a stock replacement engine. In any case I would more recommend you keep your car and look for the best option for replacing your engine as these cars are just great as I am sure you know, along with the endless possibilities you have in front of you with the clean car. I am also sure if you look hard and post up for assistance there are people in your area that can help bring your car back to life.

Good luck
Sean
