Factory Roof Rack

I'll take some pictures of my CX-7 for you also... I have the factory racks installed

i recently purchased an 07 CX-7....it doesn't have the factory roof rack. Where would be the best place to find one of these, aside from the dealership? I've found a few online, are any more reputable than others?

I'm looking to add two bike racks and a cargo box of some sort later.

Thanks,
Staton

here's my ride with the factory roof racks on.

Alright, 2 posts up you'll see that I was looking for some factory racks. Well since then I have found them, installed them, and bought and installed the Rocky Mounts Noose bike rack. I ride a lot and need the extra room inside, so on days that weather permits the bike will be on top increasing my storage space inside. It seems to be a great rack...I'm going to test it tomorrow with the old bike considering the "new" bike is 1/4 the cost of the 7. I'd be sick if I through it off going around a corner "testing". (pukey)

Pics to follow of all things mentioned.

Not sure about the 900 UK version. I have the US Thule Atlantis 1600. This is smaller about 39 lbs. Looks like the 900 is equivelent to the US Atlantis 2100 which weighs 56 lbs.

Here in the US, the Mazda CX-7 Factory rack in the catalog says that it supports 100 lbs. evenly distributed. So it seems like the 2100/900 would be ok, as long as you don't put more then 44 lbs in it.

Have you had an issues with the box on the standard rack. Thule doesn't seem to support the factory rack. They claim they haven't tested it and therefore won't be responsible for anything... whatever that means. The funny part is if you order the one from Mazda it is a Thule box.

I actually have a Thule roof rack system that I have had since my Y2K civic. I have modded it to fit a mz3 and then my 07 CX7. It actually fits and works great. I will try and post some pics tonight.

The Thule box works fine on the Factory rack. I've had it on for 2 winters lugging ski/snowboard equipment. Like you said.. it is the same one that you can order directly from Mazda as an accessory. It is just cheaper to buy it from other places.

I ended up buying the Thule 1600 Atlantis.... not sure exactly which one Mazda is Hawking. From the specs it looks like they are selling the Evolution 1600, which is heavier and a discontinued model. I paid 449 for the Thule at a local Eastern Mountain Sports store. It was about as cheap as I could find it locally and from what was available online without waiting too long since I need it this weekend. Some of the online places are charging 70 dollars to ship it. Amazon has free shipping but the price was a bit higher and I couldn't wait for it.... also Amazon now charges tax to NY so I would have paid more.

It's still odd that the factory rack only holds 100 pounds so if I deduct the weight of the Thule box, I'm left with about 60 lbs of cargo. Frankly, I don't buy the weight limit. I think they grossly understate weight capacity for legal reasons in order to reduce liability. I'll try not to go too high over and try to save the box for light bulky things, but I imagine I could toss about 100 lbs. inside the box without too much cause for concern.

Yeah.. I looked up the Evolution. The specs and pic do seem to match the Mazda Specs a little better then the Atlantis. The Atlantis is slight shorter but wider then the Evolution. The Atlantis is also 8 pounds lighter. I didn't even notice the Evolution because it must have been discontinued for a while. It wasn't available from Thule last year even.

I bet if you order it from Mazda it would be the Atlantis. Anyone order the Mazda one?

I have the Mazda racks and the Thule cargo pod they sell as well.

I have had zero issues.

Keep in mind the load ratings are very conservative as they do not want to be responsible if you load it up and something lets go.

I have filled mine up for trips to Disneyland 6 hours each way and a few long drives to the mountain where I drove quite aggressively.

No issues.

Be sure you get the clamps locked tight without any slack.

I would not fill it with bricks (headshake but with cloths an ice chest etc it works fine.

Factory Roof Racks for 98 Familia

Hi,
I'm currently driving a 1998 Mazda Familia (5 door) with factory roof racks.
Having purchased a Thule bike carrier, i'm looking at attaching it to these racks. It seems to have the appropriate set up...........However, I'm not exactly sure how to remove the end panels in order to slide the bike rack on.
Does anyone have access to a roof rack guide for this style of car? Any help at all would be much appreciated.
I've removed the screws holding it in, but it doesn't want to budge much. I'd rather not break something by pure force!
Thanking you in advance to anyone who can help me!

The outer edge covers are on with snaps which are clipped to the inner part that actually is bolted to the roof of the car. Carefully push upper ends straight up.

Then unbolt inner end piece. Remove tube.

Reverse once racks are installed.
