2010 CX-9 Touring
Hello I am just starting to log into the forum. I just purchased a 2010 Cx-9 touring, and I am considering retrofitting the factory navigation system into the car(nailbyt). I have successfully completed this twice before on two other cars. One was easy as there were aftermarket kits, the other was on a 2008 car in 2009, and the manufacturer did not have a technical manual available so I had to do my research and was successful in short order (6 saturdays and sunday combos).

I am just starting to look into this(detect) and i was wondering if anyone on this forum has looked into this yet?(encourage)

Regards and Thanks

Nuru

Initial research using the dealer are interesting. We could not find any harnesses that did not include the smartkey. But without the entire schematic I cannot tell if the connections to the main body harness of the Radio/NAV head unit is so different it won't work? My experience on other vehicles is that it is generally not, but with Mazda, I am finding you never know. I am hoping it is just a matter of finding power, connecting the speakers and adding the GPS antenna back in. First look for prices indicated that some used units are on sale for 1/2 of what the dealer charges. More expensive in either case than what the after market units cost, but I would keep all my interior controls. A lot less costly than doing it in my Benz (~$2k) is the target, I just have to be patient and do my research before making a full commitment :D.

OBTW - the wiring Diagram for the CX-9 has a part number of 9999-95-009 G-10. The cost they gave me was ~$85

nuru, the OEM navigation is so lame... very unfriendly to use. If not for the factory looks I'd use the aftermarket GPS for much less$ and higher value.

memasterac; I have looked at the after market gear and it is impressive. However since you lose some of the stock buttons, and some have had issues with their AC, I want to try to stay with the factory unit. However, if I find it is just too costly to retrofit. I may go with one of the Pioneer options and rewire the controls for info and clock, etc, LOL! I am also considering configuring for Front and rear cameras too.

The Chinese GPS is really a piece of crap. Do a search on this forum I have posted some of my experience of purchasing and installing the Caska unit (exactly same as the one Crutchfield sells with Rosen brand name). I eventually took some lost and returned it.... it was really a bad experience.

I did my project to switch from OEM GPS to the Chinese Caska unit so there are so many things just not compatible. If I were you to upgrade from non-navi I will probably look for more established brand like Pioneer or Kenwood, etc. The only catch is you'll loose the INFO button.

Ah a fellow BA CA native, thanks for the insight. Yep I did realize that the info button and clock were gone once you do this. I am still researching the factory NAV retrofit as my primary goal. I have been reviewing the schematics online at Mazda and it might be a little easier than I originally thought. But I am still reviewing.

HI nuru
Iwas woundering if you have made any advancement for the nav retrofit. I am interested in what you have found

Not much progress since, I am trying to get a pic of the rear of each type of head unit, before pulling mine out and looking at the wiring, and getting a Factory Nav unit and looking at it.

I have abandoned trying to do this as the recyclers want too much for these units. They seem to want to charge 1500 bucks for a used head unit, and it only costs 2500 bucks at the dealer (wholesale probably $1500 - $1700). Also from what I see on the threads, the Nav unit is not satisfactory for most users. I am looking into the Rosen Entertainment Systems Unit as it seems to be the most compatible as with the correct adapters it can actually control the info display too. A rarity amongst the aftermarket systems. Most of these require that you use a special adapter to plug up your factory radio temporarily and then set the clock, then unplug the factory radio.
2011s and 2012s seem to have an issue with their AC when one installs an aftermarket radio too. See the thread

and for 2010 and below, no issues with AC
