Extended bumper-bumper Warranty

It's my first time buying a new car so onward with the questions....

I was quoted CDN $960 + tax to extend the MSP's bumper to bumper warranty from 3/60 to 5/100.

Do you guys think it's worth the $$$ for the extra 2 years?

It's a shame that the MSP just missed the new 4/80 Mazda warranty for 2003 cars and beyond.

Here's what I've learned on extended warranties:

1) Most companies that offer extended plans (service, warranty etc) bag about a 95% profit. Radio Shack, Future Shop, Car Dealers - it's all the same

2) The price is just as negotiable as anything else. Knowing their profit margin, you can very easily bargain on the warranty.

3) Mazda (and most others) let you purchase the warranty WHENEVER you like. Ie. If the car is treating you well at the end of 3 years, don't buy it. If the car is a lemon at the end of 3 years (normal warranty), then buy the warranty. Mazda charges a small 'penalty' for purchasing the warranty after 20,000 km - something like $250 on their most expensive plan. BUT, since warranties are negotiable, this fee may be waived.

In summary, my opinion is to wait. There very little (if any) penalty for seeing how things go. Mazda WANTS to sell you that warranty even before you turn the key - they have much better changes of a sale.

Good luck,

When I got my mp3, the extra warranty was only another 250.00 CDN. So someone is getting ripped off at those prices..WOW!

And he told me at the time, I could wait one year before getting it or 20000 kms.

I bought my MP3 used with 20,000 miles on it. I also bought the extended warranty with it, it was originally like $1100 but the dealer knocked $150 off the price. Also if I got the extended warranty my interest rate on my loan went down a whole percent wich would save me like $400 over the life of the loan so I figured it was worth it. The only thing is though, when the extended warranty kicks in there is a copay when you have to get stuff done. I can't remember what it is. I personally would say it's worth it. Especially hearing all the bad things happening to the trannys on this page, only having to pay a $100 copay sure beats paying for a new tranny.

If your going to keep this car beyond 3 yrs....get the warranty. Between the clunk, and tranny problems.....it'll be worth it.

Personally. If I get the MSP, if I have it more then 18 months, I'll be amazed.

My dealer manager went to that meeting two weeks ago in halifax. I mentioned this in another thread. But anyhow, they got to see the new 2004 Protege sedans AND Protege 5's. Yes, the P5 is being redone already. Apparantly, the P5 doesn't look all that great. But, the sedans are better, and it's a huge difference. Of course, now their being called the Mazda 3. They are being released Nov 2003, and that date is set in stone. ( I'm laughing at that , but that's what I was told). Apparantly, Mazda is planning a HUGE year with the intro of the 6, then Mazdaspeed, and they'll finish the year with a bang with the 3.

So, I get MSP now....2 years from now....Mazdaspeed 3? Hmmmm. Assuming they fix the damn clunk. Otherwise I'll be driving a damn Honda again.

A few items....

Wouldn't the tranny be covered under the powertrain warranty which is 5 / 100 already?

$960 seems steep now that I've seen what's paid with the MP3. This can't be based on the regular protege. It gotta be a selling job they're doing in saying they'll consider raising it in the new year to reflect the MSP. But who knows..

Seems it's still worth it as the 4th/5th year could be troubles if I keep the car.

If I don't, I'm inclined to think that it's easier to sell it for a higher price if there's still warranty left on it.

Nonetheless, thanks for the info and I would definitely try and bargain that down a bit for sure, or wait a little.

And any seen spy pictures of the new Mazda 3 at all?!

The $960 was the regular Protege ES price .... he showed me the price sheet .... there was no listing yet for the msp.
