Exhaust System for MS3

Ok here we go I'm so used of making old cars go fast alot of the new car stuff im learning as I go. With that said , If you have a state where emissions aren't enforced what exhaust system would you choose? I know that on my old school rides we usually did 3" straight exhaust no cat no muffler. Some people did borla or Magna ect.. for the sound.

Corksport turbo back is a good choice.

Cobb has a turbo back system coming out eventually

CP-E I beleive also has an exhaust system, but it has a catted downpipe which is a bit more restrictive than the corksport DP.

Right now I beleive the CS is probably the best choice.

For cat back systems, there are a lot of options, including mazdaspeed, vibrant and HKS.

i think the best bet is to have cp-e turbo back exhaust and get the high flow cat. with corksport you have to trick the ecu to think it has a cat which i believe is too much to worry about, with cp-e's downpipe it wont throw a check engine light and thats something i like. not having to worry about s*** ******* up is my way of thinking

Its not going to mess anything up with the CEL, its an emissions CEL. And the Corksport DP comes with a O2 sim or something like it that tells the motor "hey, don't worry, we're still friends with trees. Theres a cat here, trust me!"

I am very happy with my GHL catback. I think when it is mated to the right downpipe (most likely corksport), it will be a very solid system. I love the sound of the GHL, I have a 5 year pass on emissions, so with or without emissions testing, I would say that this is the system i would choose.

on the issue of the downpipe, I am currently researching a company that makes an automated downpipe. One that can switch from a straight dump off of the turbo or, if I am feeling more conservative, can be switched back to exhaust system already in place. I know that this is very common in the Subie world and there are a couple MSP's that have this done. Right now im still only researching this idea, but come springtime, I may make it a reality.

(rofl)

Is the GHL a high flow unit ?

Yup, but remember, its a catback, not a replacement for the converter like the Vibrant system.

2 flaws with the GHL.. although its a beautiful piece, you need to make a few mods. The first is changing out the tips. The brilliant R&D folks over there decided to pinch the tip portion down to fit the 4 inch tip on there. The tip they chose to use goes from 4inch to 2.5 inch... I found the same exact tip on ebay for $23 that is 4" outter and 3" inner.. So i the stock one chopped off and this one welded. GHL could have done the same fricken thing but chose not to for their " convenience ". Pretty idiotic.

Second problem is the hangers are to high and causes the system to bang around in tight turns and speed bumps. They need to be shortened.

If i was to do this all over again, i would go either Corksport or HKS.

Yea I've always been a fan of HKS parts but I'll go with whomever offers the best performance and doesnt sound like a fart.

I appreciate the info Haltech I'd prefer a system that wont need any modification to give the best performance so I'll look to cork and HKS when the time comes.

I just looked at the HKS and the cat style on it looks restrictive. I think the cork sports looks a bit more free flowing.

the thing with the tip, i had no idea about, didnt seem to hinder performance any. As for the hangers, I didnt think that shortening them was necessary, a cheaper and less labor intensive solution is just a stiffer set of hanger bushings. The stock ones are really soft and let the system rattle around. I have been looking for a good set of these if anyone has any suggestions let me know.

On the main question, if emissions wasn't an issue? Three inches down and out the back, no cats no mufflers.

I saw a sturdy pair for the MSP5 but dont know if the hangers are the same on the MS3. Otherwise, i found the hangers you may want. Ill post a link to them when i get home.

I wouldn't recommend a non-catted TBE... After talking to PG, CS, and CP-E, seems like customers that bought non-catted TBEs, 4-5 months down the road come back begging for a high-flow cat due to their car smelling like gas; interior absorbs the odor...

The difference between a high-flow cat and non-cat TBE is roughly 4-5 HP; not worth it personally...

CS (Cork Sport) does not offer a catted system at this time... Through my research of looking for TBEs, the only company right now that offers a high-flow catted system is CP-E... I read that vibrant has a catted system but its after the 2nd O2... Didn't really look much into Vibrant...

corksports latest dosnt throw any codes i have the corksport DP im looking at doing a highflow cat in second cats position along with a racing cut out back of my mind stuff.

Thats because they need to weld the slip joints on the catback. I have no odor fumes in my interior and have been running the PG pipe since it was released. I believe Pg stated rougly 15-20 hp is gained removing the second converter.

What downpipe are you running? I've been told as long as you have some type of cat (at least one) in the system, you are fine...

I have a Corksport that i havent installed yet. And from what ive seen, if you keep one cat, you should not have an issue. There isnt an exact number of how many people have a problem with their turbo seals.

What about the turbo xs exhaust? It seems that this exhaust parts are not talk'ed alot. Is it bad quality or...? I personnaly like the sound and it seems to be a good piece.
