exhaust manifold gasket replacement

Ok so basically I have an exhaust leak at the manifold gasket, is can the manifold be removed without taking the turbo off?

And also can someone give me the torque/sequence for the manifold bolts?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

So turbo needs to come out correct? It's not a big deal either way I just need to make enough time depending on what needs to come out... I kind of want to pull everything out anyways to put in new gaskets. If there's a guide that's awsome... If not I guess ill just wing it as usual haha

manifold,turbo,s-pipe,hot pipe, intake, and the radiator all have to come out to change the exhaust mani gasket.

The turbo doesnt need to come off... close but doesn't fully need to come off.

1) remove fans (not really needed but gives you a bit more room to work with) and place cardboard over the ran to help proect the rad fins.
2) remove intake
3) disconnect the bracket holding the j-pipe to the block/transmission (i forget which one its bolted to)
4) disconnect the bracket thats holding the s-pipe to the block.
5) disconnect the EGR pipe
6) remove all bolts from the head

Now your mani should freely pull forward enough to give you room to replace the exhaust to head gasket.

Thanks for chiming in stealth :) , do you think ill need to clean anything on the head before placing the gasket? Or is it just a metal gasket that I just slap in and re bolt everything up? And is there a specified torque/sequence?

If you have a leak, it has built up a lot of carbon where the leak was, so you'll want to clean that with some brake clean. The cleaner the surfaces are the better, but the metal gasket is there to make the seal.

What makes you so sure it is the gasket? Are all your bolts tight? Can you see the sooty area where the leak is?

Here is the PDF with the torque specs.

Well ya know I do have a bad habit of assuming things lol
But basically it started out a couple weeks ago... When I started it after a cold soak I would get kind of a moderate pitch of a buzz in my exhaust note almost every time I would accelerate moderately and would eventually go away when warm.

This morning after I got to work I noticed the idle as being a bit off tone of what it usually was and I feathered the gas a little and Everytime I would get that buzz out of my exhaust note, it was comming from the pass. Side of the manifold... I haven't had any time to look into it further so I figured I would pull the manifold to check the gasket/manifold.

Btw if it makes any difference the car was in storage like 6-7 months prior to me buying it bc the guy had tore his acl in his left leg, I got it at 68k and I'm at 74k now and I've had like 4 separate issues 2 of which need to be fixed yet - boost leak and that nasty buzz comming from the manifold lol

Sorry for such a long post lol

i have the same issue with that, thought the motor was going bad first time i heard it. i was also thinking bout replacing IM gasket

yea idk for sure ill have to investigate further, im pretty positive that the sound is comming from the manifold though. my only solid evidence for that is because i put my hand on the side of the manifold to try and feel for an exhaust leak and the buzz slightly echoed off my hand when i reved it...

If this sounds like a problem anyone else has ever had a quick solution would be bomb! lol i hate knowing something is wrong with my car and not having the time or the funding to do sh%$ about it =/

Every 6 months or so I have to retighten my manifold bolts. The first time it happened I had no idea what it was either, sounded like a diesel VW bug until it warmed up. I posted a bunch of vids etc. Eventually someone PM'd me and told me to check those bolts. When I took off the heat shield, one bolt fell completely out and another was missing. Although I later found half of it still in there.

Just the past few weeks, it started ticking again, but it sounds a little different this time. I checked my bolts and they are all tight still. I don't see any visible cracks in any of the exhaust segments, and there no reason for the gasket to "go bad" since it is metal. It goes away very quickly after startup and isn't that noticeable in the car, so I may just live with it. If it is a cracked manifold, the options to fix it are few, hard to find, and expensive. I would probably just have it rewelded, but that's not happening until the winter.

yeah i hear ya! funny enough a month or so ago when i replaced my WGA i did notice one bolt came loose and was just sort of laying there in the bolt hole!!! Do you torque them down? or do you just snug them up with the good ol' "close enough" go around lol

hey i pulled the heat-shield yesterday when i brought my car in the shop for an oil change and go figure the manifold bolts on the pass. side were loose lol, i kinda just guess at tightening them... but its funny to think about it now bc when i did my WGA i noticed one bolt had worked its way all the way out and was just laying there in the bolt hole! haha i should have guess it was something along those lines =P
