Engine Whistling Noise ???

Mazda Protege LX 2003
My protege has developed a recent noise that sounds a lot like turbo whine, which is a bit wierd for an NA car. The noise is ONLY made under hard acceleration, over 3500rpm. It is not reproducable from a hood-up rev-the-piss-out-of-the-motor inspection.

Any ideas?

you might have a exhaust leak..same thing hapenned to me. i had to change a few gaskets..

My car used to do that above 6,000rpm. Then the VICS let go, doing $3,100 damage. Doesn't whistle since the repair. The whistling in my case may have been caused by the VICS screws protruding into the airstream as they backed out. If you haven't locktited your VICS screws, I would reccomend checking them ASAP.

BTW, my car is an Australian BJ with a 1.8 FP engine and was not included in the factory recall for the VICS problem.

When i got my axle-back installed, the whistling went away. Might be your muffler...

i have a sound like that too, but its always there, even at idle. I like the sound sometiems, lol sounds like a turbo engine.

The sound is heard better when the temp is lower.

Sounds like I'm gonna have some money coming out of my ass pretty soon it any of this could be the sound I'm getting also. s***

Highway Speed Whine

I've had my 2002 MP5 for almost two months right now. I've done a lot of fixes on it to bring it up to my maintenance expectations and I'm dealing with the little things. At highway speeds, there is a constant whine, possibly a whistle, that is only present with throttle application. The pitch goes up and down with speed. Once I lift off the throttle, the noise goes away. I've already gone from a cold to short air filter (keep the filter off the salt covered roads in the winter), plugs changed, oil and gear oil changed. I didn't install the aftermarket stereo that came with the car but I've read before in past installations of watching some of the wires crossing as to avoid a whine.

Any ideas?

I've sometimes faintly heard electrical whine briefly after starting with high electrical load. Like the noise often heard on the in car footage of some race cars.

The engine whistle was completely different, and cost 3k to get rid of!

Some exhausts have a whistle too. I've had 3 exhausts and the latest one has a slight wooshing/whistle under acceleration.

Then there's the loose plastic that starts making noise at exactly 100kph...

Crikies mate, $3K to fix the noise!?!? I'll turn up the radio. Off subject, do you have any repair manuals "down under" other than the factory books? There are none in the states making these forums extremely valuable.

3k to repair the damage caused when the #4 cylinder ate a VICS screw...

The only commercially available publications that I know of are by Bookworks. I have their Wiring Diagram Supplement and FP/FS engine book. Try googling that. Nothing by Haynes/Gregory's etc that I know of.

My MSP also has that whistle like sound but mine is only present at idle and when i give it any throttle it goes away but when i let back off it comes back. but whats weird is that its not always there it will come and go some times or stay for long time and sometimes i wont hear it for a few days. its so inconsistent. i am confused about it.
