Hi,

I'm new and french quebecois so, excuse my english!

I want to buy a new MP5 but I heard bad things about the 2.0L engine. Some people who baught the 2001 car begins having trouble, like head gasket.

Please, tell me that you never heard anything about it... I really want that car!

Thanks in advance

Oh yeah, what about the automatic transmission, is it reliable at long term? Is the sport mod really does a difference?

I really haven't had any problems with mine, nothing but fun man! I dunno how the automatic tranny works out, but my 5-speed works great. Good luck! Keep us updated, and welcome to the club!

The auto ranny has given out its fair share of problems but the stock non turbocharged protege engine has been very solid!

I haven't heard of any engine problems, in fact the 99-03 Protege is the most reliable model Mazda has ever made (source: Consumer Reports)

Curious...
What "fair share of problems" have been going on with the auto tranny?

My sportshift auto runs great.

I have heard lots of clutch fork issues with the manual tranny but no issues with the sportshift auto.

search in the P5 forum and you should find alot of info on it.

haven't hear of any head gasket issue?? i have the auto and i've got 38K miles, no problems and i drive the car pretty hard. joe

I had the PR5 and it was nice but I like my SPEED better.

Get what ever you like man.

though i love the way my p5 handles its engine is a regular weakness...the tranny already slips out of 3rd gear sometimes and the engine unwillingly does not smoothly rev to redline...it is thrashy sounding and shakes the car with just the blip of the throttle

Jaje - Why would you drive your P5 to redline? The car's HP peaks under 6000rpm and it's just overkill doing so. Now, Hondas require you to rev the hell out of them to make any power.

No problems with my sport shift, though I've heard of problems with it. But some of those people were constantly using the shift mode, of which it was not attended for. Its only really for small track sessions, merging into traffic and thats it.
Still shift nicely in auto mode.

Had no problem with power deliverly in the FS-DE engine at all, in fact seems pretty smooth for the most part.

Salut HomerS!

I've had my P5 since February 2002. NO problems with the engine, I can't say about the auto tranny 'cause I have the manual one.

Only one complaint : fuel mileage isn't as good as I thought it would be.

I find that reving over 4500RPM is useless, my opinion.

And the http://www.clubprotegequebec.com/ has so many french language errors that I find it quite offensive...I went there a few times but the "typos" are so numerous that I found it hard to enjoy. This forum is the best. :) :) :)

Mazda auto trans. have always sucked ass... Not to good in the long run.. Go with the 5 speed.

I took a Sport shift model for a test drive. OMG, it felt like I was driving backwards! It's a shame, and I've driven auto tranny cars for so long.

I think my P5 is great with the sport shift auto . I am in my 40's so that may have something to do with it . Feel free to ask as many questons as you like . I find these people are real helpful
