engine swap/rebuild

So I just bought a used long block the other day to replace my motor because I think I spun a rod bearing. I have a few questions before I get started though. What should be replaced before swapping in the the motor. I have the timing belt and drive belt. Should the water pump be replaced too?

You have to go into a bit more detail, as to which engine you got etc, before everyone can start chimming in.

It matters cause there really isnt alot of point upgrading a Auto, unless your doing it for show, you cant turbocharge it or anything like that. However since your going Manual it might be a good idea to build it up to be turbocharged, since everyone at some point wants one since your building from the ground up you should take the chance to build it up, Pistons, Rods, Port Polished Head, etc. etc. Its not really that simple to just do it, but in theroy since your starting from the ground up it the best time to do it. Unless of course you just want a working engine again, then just stick to stock, and engine with 44k on it should be fine the whole way around unless it locks really beat.

yeah I see what you're saying but I pretty much have two engines right now. I just want to swap the motor I just bought into my car to get it running. I haven't driven it for about a month and a half now. The original motor which I am going to pull out will be the one I'm building. I just wanted to know if there is anything I should replace on the replacement motor right now before I stick it in the car. IE. belts or whatever. I already have a timing belt and drive belt because there is none on the motor right now. I was thinking about a water pump but I'm gonna skip out on that right now. Anything else I should replace.

I have plans for my rebuild on the engine.
Pauter rods
HiBoost OEM Pistons
OEM everything else

Doing the motor swap/replace I would do all the basic's Plugs/Belts/Plug wires/sensors that dont cost 100's, things to that nature but doing things like water pump/starter things like that arent really needed, however since the location of the alternator sucks really bad I would think about doing that one.

Do you exactly how many belts are on the car? I see two but the person at Kragen sold me three. Timing, Drive/Alternator, and PS/AC. Is there one for PS/AC? I haven't really taken the time to look.

Ok guys, I need some help. I'm trying the get the heat shield off but I stripped one of the bolts. Anyone have any ideas how I would get it out? I've already tried airtools, drilling but it's barely doing anything to the bolt.

you can use a nut extractor to remove a stripped bolt. a set can be picked up pretty reasonably at a hardware store. i have sold water pumps to people at 60,000 miles for tune up purposes and that seems to be a growing norm at my dealership.

there are indeed three belts on this car. if possible i would go OEM on things like belts.

let me know if you need anything for the rebuild as I carry the top parts needed to do the job at good prices, even the hard to find nonsense.

Day 1

So I started doing the swap today but I didn't get too far. I stripped one of the heat shield bolts and I couldn't get it off even after going to Sears and buying a bolt extractor. I cleaned some of the parts as I went also. Didn't get as far as I wanted to today but I guess I'll give it another try maybe tommorrow.

Things that got done today:
Removed battery
Removed radiator
Removed Intake
Unplugged most of the connectors

Thanks. I know I will probably need help soon. I've never done this type of work before. Most I have ever done on cars is brakes so I am completely new to this.

man I thought I was getting ripped off, I paid 500 for a complete motor with 40K on it eek :)

yea, it's a bit high but i didn't want to deal with shipping or anything if there is something wrong with the motor. the place was only 20 mins away
