Engine Replacement Interchangeability FAQ Guide

ok...... just found out something i did not notice before. My 95 probe block does not have a spot for the knock sensor.

s***.

There is an unused hex head plug about 2 inches to the right. Cant i use that? from what i can find, the knock sensor just has to be solidly bolted into the block.

so let me understand this, if i went to pull a part today and pulled the engine out of a 93 mx6 then it would fit correct? i pulled the valve cover off and it would fit any FS except it doesnt have a hole for the cam sensor so thats pretty much junk
but for 100 bucks thats a great deal on an engine...

so replace valve cover, use crank from protege engine, use head from protege engine

thats it or did i miss something

You would want to use the head w/ valve cover from the protege, also the crank (should be forged.) So you are looking at $100 for a block, rods, pistons and a fair amount of work. Also, some of the older blocks dont have the hole for the knock sensor IIRC.

Yeah, but don't bother using the 93-99 FS engines. The FS block was revised in the later year models to be stronger and the oil galleries and coolant passages improved. Also, someone said the older FS blocks didn't have a knock sensor hole, and Protege's have knock sensors so you will have to figure a new way to mount it.

x2! I never saw this pop up before and was thinking of creating the 1 millionth thread asking if our motors are the same as a normal protege..

the starter on the manual car is a 3 bolt flange design but the starter on a auto is a 2 bolt

uhhhhh when i changed my clutch i only had to take out one bolt to pull the starter... did someone not put some bolts back in?

this should be stickied. i realize the OP is... well... but still. this has almost every question people ask 10,000x about swapping engines. whats forged, not forged, what needs the cam sensors swapped... etc.

im glad yudkib commented on here or else i would not have located this in time lol... All Useful Info... woot woot

And it's still not stickied.. instead we have stickies about direct replacement manifolds that don't exist anymore and EMS solutions that no one uses.

That's good news, but I don't see why it would take months?! You unsticky the old worthless crap that is outdated and no longer relevant, and sticky the new relevant threads. I think we just need a couple mods that actually visit this section of the forum..

Anyway, rant over.. sorry for the off topicness. But this for sure needs to be up there with the daily driven MSP thread. People are popping engines every other week it seems.

agreed, but said individual is afraid even the dated information is better than none. and he might be right. the fact is, we need NEW stickies, not just moving them around or deleting them.

Things can't happen overnight. People have lives. When I get time I'll finish some of the plans I have. There are many I keep pushing back and there are many I'm currently working on.... A stickie must be approved. Just cause it wa requested like yesterday doesn't mean it will happen overnight.

kyle, this would be a very good thread to mash-up with edwins. add a picture of the vacuum routing for the MSP since thats not an uncommon request.
the more i think about it, the more i think all the OEM stuff should be in one thread... for instance, i have the turbo parts list and the mazdaspeed partial turbo install manual. put those in there too - and maybe roll the reflash in there. yeah its a lot of info for one thread, but its all pertinent, OEM related, and FAQ's.

then do turbo manis, turbos, downpipes, and exhaust in one thread.

have a thread with EMS options, and link to the map libraries and install guide... no need to have three or four stickies on EMS by itself.

thats like 90% of the info at the top of the page in three threads. collapses six stickies into three and adds more, better, and newer information.
for another bonus, put the "mods for a DD" and "winter preparation" into one thread too. four stickies. HUGE improvement.
