engine probs

not sure if they are compatible so i cant help you there, sorry. i definitely feel like its a problem with transferring over from start to run. it might be possible that the 1.8 isnt powerful enough to efficiently turn over the 2.0, but wait for other input, im just throwing out possibilities

I haven't looked at any specs for the 1.8 version, don't know if the starter is at all different. What I do know is that the 2.0 FS is rather easy to start normally, you can jumpstart it cold from just over walking speed. I have gotten mine running in negative 20 celcius with a bad battery with the starter just bare barely running.

Not sure if there are any differences on the engine harness, but have you changed that to the 2.0? Have you tried starting the engine with the spark plugs out to confirm that they are in fact giving sparks? Checked for error codes?

havent checked timing yet actually since it ran in the old car ...and im using the 1.8 starter

What wiring harness did you use, the one from the 2.0L or your original 1.8L ? If it's still the original harness from the car, try starting the engine with your 1.8L ECU, but do not rev it at all, just let it idle for 5-10 seconds to see if it runs.

Get back to me once you've done this test.

its the original harness..tried both 1.8 and 2.0 ecu's..made no diffrence!
btw the original harness plugged right in to all of the 2.0 sensors and everything. nothing was diffrent

EDIT: no codes

Check all the fuses in the fusebox in the engine bay, also check your grounds.

fuses were checked. on the grounds let me see if ive got this straight.
theres 1 that bolts to trans
1 on passenger MM
2 that bolt to the coil support bracket
1 from intake to firewall
i think that is all of them. im not missing any am i?

Have you tried doing a test to see if both coils are firing ?

yup ive ran inline testers and grouded the wires to the vc and it sparked. thats why im lost. it has all the elements it needs and it should run. but it dosent

Is there fuel going to the injectors ? Plus are they working ? Is the timing set properly.

like i said ive gotta check the timing (its raining right now) and injectors are firing as far i know. is there an easy test to check the injectors?

There is a tester, might want to check any local shops. If you pull the line to the fuel rail and start, do you get gas coming out ?

I'm leaning more on timing right now, because you have spark on both coils and wiring has been checked out. Timing belt should look like this:

yes i have good pressure for sure. what is the eaisiest way to check timing in this car...it almost seems faster to pull the motor lol

ok pulled valve cover ...both cams are in perfect time.

ok update:
i tried to start it again with the intake off..the back firing is coming from intake which would indicate timing. but according to the marks its timed right..any ideas>?

just follow focuses diagram, looks like your going to have to pull the engine though to check the bottom end

Doesn't need to pull. Stick in a pen or pencil in the first cylinder and watch it to see that it is a TDC when the timing marks align on the cam gears. The pencil should come up all the way, and if you go past it will start to go down again, that way you will know Top Dead Center on cylinder 1.

great idea..honestly didnt think to check like that...ok so its at TDC on Cyl 1 when marks are lined up.....now i really am lost

Let me make it simple. When I and E line up as in the picture above, the pencil in Cyl. 1 should be at it's highest point.
