Engine needs too much oil?

:
2011 Mazda CX-9 GT AWD
Hi folks,

Yesterday I changed the oil on my 2011 CX-9 GT AWD. I filled 5.5 QT yesterday and this morning I checked the level and found the level was at the min mark on the stick. So I kept filling and checking and ended up filling a bit more than 6 QT, the level is now right at the middle between the min and max oil mark.

My question is whether this is normal? The engine oil capacity is 5.5 QT according to Mazda with the oil filter change. I used mobile 1 5w-20 as well as mobile 1 oil filter.

Does anyone know if this is normal? Could it because the mobile 1 filter might have taken more oil than OE filter. I am kind of at loss why this is happening.

Any insights or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

I have an 07, but I found that it takes 6 quarts to fill it so the oil level is at the full mark. 5.5 qts in ours makes the level right in the middle of the hashes on the dip stick. I figured this out after I got scared thinking it was using oil. But after I saw the level stay at the full mark after I topped it off I figured it out. At my last oil change I put 5.5 qts in and ran the engine for a couple of minutes getting it all circulated. Then I turned it off and checked it and it was right in the middle of the hash marks on the dipstick. normally and in this case this means you are a half qrt low, so I added the rest of my last qrt. Then the oil level was perfectly on the full line.

I see. I didn't run the engine after the oil change. I guess that did it. I will go home tonight and check again.

Thanks very much. :)
