Hey guys i have a fairly modded MSP and i was looking for some feedback on a piggyback.. the two i have in mind are the unichip system and the SS-AFC. My mods are Catless 2.5 exhaust stock downpipe and jpipe, altered customs FMIC kit, altered customs SRI, ATP wastegate, BlitzDD BOV, Boost/oil pres guages, brand new motor mounts, Brnd new coils, wires, and V-power plugs gapped at .30... Looking for advice/ pros and cons if not just a straight up choose one or the other for this reason if you know what i mean. Thanks in advanced guys

splitsecond is the way to go if you do not have a Unichip authorized dealer close to you. because thats the only way that you can tune the unichip. the SSAFC is user tuneable which means that you can tune the car yourself.

wideband air/fuel gauge before anything, then split second. its the best basic EMS for these cars by a mile. everything works out of the box and theres a lot of support.
AEM FIC if you feel ambitious, need to do timing and like to do research.

What makes the ssafc better? Is it the maps? What exactly does it do for the car? Will it feel much faster and not run so rich and lastly does it control boost like the unichip?

The unit is only as good as the map that it is running. If you take your time and custom tune it to your mods, which you can do by yourself, then it will be a night and day difference. It will definitely feel faster once you lean it out a bit, and it will also save you gas money :D. The AFC does not have a boost controller however. But honestly it's not a good idea to have that power at your fingertips until you get some good bolt ons to make it safe.

okay I forgot you have some mods, but I would still save a boost controller for later down the road lol.

on paper the unichip controls more, boost and timing specifically, but theyre only tunable by unichip dealers. they write the maps and flash it on to the unit, so it can be expensive to change whenever you get a mod. the boost control on the unichip is also nothing to write home about, a lot of people end up getting greddy units to control boost.

theres a lot of maps for the SSAFC, lots of support, and you can tune it at home. some units also retard timing but cant advance it. some people view the timing as being just as crucial to tuning these cars as the AFR. it does not control boost.

either one will help with the hesitation, but for mild builds i always recommend the SSAFC of SSFTC (which does timing). its plenty for what most people want or need.

The split second is the best all around for our cars mainly because of the support from the forums here. IMHO the AEM is the better bang for the buck unit but is not as popular so support is at a minimun although I here the AEM gives great support for this unit.
If you do go with the split second we have 2 options with timing control and without. It seems that the unit with the timing contol has been giving people trouble.

Ok so it sounds like for my mods the ssafc is going to be the best bet out there.. should i get the one that controls timing or no? what kind of problems are msp owners running into with the timing control unit?

Keep in mind, SSAFC isn't going to get you much power. Better mileage and a little power. SSAFC will not make your car feel faster. It can lean out your insanely rich stock air fuel ratios.

The Unichip also leans out your afrs, but the Unichip is desirable for those that want to make big power because it allows you to advance and retard timing. But it can only be tuned by Unichip authorized dealers. You can check the Unichip site to see if there are any near you.

I just sold my ssafc and am currently looking for an unichip because I want to make some bigger power.

What stopped me from getting the SSFTC (the SSAFC with timing control) is that when I researched it when I first got my MSP months ago, I didn't hear about anyone who installed it with good results. Seems like a majority of people who used them ran into some kind of problem(s).

really? ive talked with a lot of people who said the SSAFC made their car feel much better. part of the issue were going to deal with is flashed/unflashed PCM - same as a lot of issues that come up. the flash doesnt change your pig rich AFR just your timing - and on these cars some people swear the issue is the timing, some swear its the AFR.

what were you running for ratios harry

the AFC also uses an internal map sensor and can easily support larger injectors. unichip can do this, but its not designed with that in mind out of the box quite honestly and relies on the MAF sensor. in my opinion, MAF tuning is part of the reason these cars run so poorly to begin with and a big reason why the car improves so much with the AFC out of the box.

i've seen cars with AFCs on larger injectors put down 300 hp without timing retard. i've seen unichips tuned by experts which do the same thing. a unit is only as good as the tune, no matter what you buy. but to say the AFC isn't capable of making the power that a unichip can is factually false.

the FTC tends to be a finicky unit for whatever reason. i only build them to order now if a customer really wants one. the early releases had issues we could not ever iron out with split second. personally, i feel there was too much variance unit to unit each build and on this ECU you can't have that. the FTC is a pricey option and for most people the AFC is going to do what you need it to do on this car. if you're truly looking for "big power", well that depends on what is "big" to you at the end of the day. the AFC isn't really suited for over 300 whp. at that point though, honestly, neither is the unichip, and thats territory where one should consider a standalone.

Have never got my msp tuned. But previously on my RSX Type-S, ratios ranged from 10.4 to 12.5 on the Hondata. Or something around there.

Actually, it jumped from 10.4 to 14.6, but that was because of a bad sensor. Got it replaced by the dealer and then it settled to 10.4 to 12.5.

Just did AFRs.

I'm glad I stepped away from the Honda scene. It was getting a bit too ghetto for my taste. Especially in socal.

I look forward to tuning my MSP. I'm just hoping a unichip will help me reach 250 at less than 10 psi.

wow, attitude problem. Resentful much?

I've had tunes with just a/f ratios. Don't give much power. Definite mileage improvement but 5 horsepower will not make your car noticeably faster.

Lol not really? But comparing the stock tune to a good tune on the AFC is a night and day difference. Numbers don't mean s*** if the car isn't running properly, and the AFC is excellent for a simple engine management.

you could have done what with your k20 with i/h/e/rbc/cams and k-pro.
