Engine coolant level low icon

First time poster to this forum and glad I found it. Hopefully you all can help me out. So I picked up my new 2016.5 cx-5 GT and the last few days since purchase on start up of the car the blue engine coolant icon pops up for a few minutes and then goes away. The weather has been warm and car even garage parked. Is this something I should worry about or is it common on this vehicle. Thanks in advance.

Nothing to worry about it. The blue icon is for cold engine coolant temperature. It'll be off when coolant temperature is at about 135F.

You might want to take a look through the owners manual. Blue is cold engine, drive normally until it goes out. If it blinks red have it checked immediately. If it's solid red stop the car, turn off the engine and call a tow truck.

No worries. Instead of a coolant temperature gauge, Mazda uses an idiot light. Blue means the coolant has not warmed up to operating temperature. Off means engine coolant is at operating temperature. Red means coolant is above maximum operating temperature.

Perfect. I did read the manual and saw it was only for warming up but wasn't sure of the exact temp. Was worried with even parking in garage why it would come on but go off pretty quickly. Thanks for the quick responses guys. I think I'm going to like it here

Just would like to point out, normal operating temp for an engine is 180-210F. Just because the blue light went away, doesn't really mean you're up to normal operating temp.

Coolant temps hitting 135 probably means oil temp around 80-90 on a 50-60*F day, if that, at least based off my Z06 which had digital read-outs for every parameter. Also consider the Z06 had a liquid oil cooler that also acted to heat the oil when cold, too, but offset that with the fact that it took roughly 11 quarts.

People often think that is a low coolant icon - I've even had shop guys (not Mazda ones) think that.

Yes if we really want to be specific, it is actually the oil temp that we are concerned with and less the coolant temp as far as getting the engine to normal operating temps. Once coolant temp hits 180 F, oil temp will still be behind and the general advice is to give 5 more minutes before doing any spirited driving/redlining.

Yeah I knew it wasn't a low level just low temp until the engine warmed up. Made more sense once I knew the temp it has to get to before it shuts off.
