Ems Help!

Okay, I have a built NA motor installed with 11:1 compression, and a few other goodies. I thought that I could install an air fuel controller to get more fuel to the motor and optimize performance. I just found out though that the AFC will only control either the MAF or MAP sensor (I can't remember which one) Does anyone have any EMS suggestions other than a full standalone. I have read that most boosted applications use a Unichip but I don't think it will work for me. Are there any NA experts out there that can help me? I read something about a Protuner? Does anyone know anything about this? Any help is appreciated.

You can use the DSM AFC. It's setup to come "alive" at 1psi of boost, but you can change it to 20" of vac or whatever, basically giving you standalone fuel control. To get more power with your setup, I'd ge the MP3 ECU (timing is advanced as hell, and the power delivery is nice and linear) and then get the AFC.

11:1 compression pistons...where did you get those and cost???i want some, and do you have to have engine management to run those???

Sorry, Pistons aren't 11:1. They are 10.4:1 (FS-ZE) then the head is decked and honed to up the comp. to 11:1

For a compression ratio change of that much, engine management would be required...

engine should WORK with higher comp pistons - but it wouldn't be advisable.

I'd certainly want to be controlling the timing etc.

you've built an NA motor, you've got high comp pistons, you've probably spent big dollars elsewhere - why skrimp at the last minute?

Best way to safe guard your investment is to get a piggy back or standalone.

Maxx Mazda: not sure how the stock ecu would be able to compensate - last time i checked they don't have compression sensors... knock sensor yes - but there will be limitations to how far the ecu can retard or advance timing.

as far as the stock ecu is concerned, nothing has changed and it will continue doing things as it has been doing things....

hi guys,im new here,if i changed my piston to 10.7:! comp ratio from arias forged piston, and a pauter connecting forged rods,do i have to use a stand alone emange?which one is better?megasquirt or unichip?my car is NA built.

I think the consensis is you don't "have to"
but you most definantly SHOULD so you can get your timing and fuel right for your new internals....like i said before, you spend a bomb rebuilding the motor, why skimp at the last minute by getting sub par engine management?

emanage is a piggy back not stand alone.

megasquirt is probably going to give you a headache as they are sort of a DIY ECU...

Unichip i have no experience with.

I run a Microtech LT10S with X4 ignition module and bosch individual coil packs on my NA protege - works a treat.....heavilly recommended

I used to have those. You want to make sure you have proper engine management for real, and not too much timing.

how big was the improvement with the pistions.. i have and MP3 ecu now, but a rod just started knocken in my 2ND motor, so i plan to rebuild the first motor and swap soon.. thinking of getting the j-spec pistions,, 10.4:1 i think..if it only went up 5 hp or so i might skip it, but if thers 10-15hp to be found..MP3 ecu, headers, midpipe, and full exhaust, and underdrive pully are on the car now.. thanks

with the right management system, suitable head work and so forth, you can reap good gains out of high comp pistons etc.

If you don't have the other things around them to support the higher compression, you'll end up being disappointed.

I just got off the phone at split second talking to Mark he has a piggy back that he can design for the car

more info about the piggy back, please

He can design a piggy (AFC) to fit your N/A protege. Tell him what has been done to the car. I am not sure of cost but give it a try.
