Emergency 911 Notification--How does it work?

I activated emergency 911 notification in one of my 2016 CX-5's menus, but the owner's manual has little information on exactly how it works. I assume it is triggered by airbag deployment, but I suppose it could use other data from the various sensors in the car. If it is triggered, what information is provided to the 911 operator? The CX-5 has the navigation system and my phone has a GPS receiver, so does the 911 operator get GPS coordinates or other location data, e.g. street or road name?

I hope to never use this system, but out of curiosity I'd like to know more about how it works.
