When I got my Racing Mazda 4-2-1, it was obvious the EGR boss was misaligned--angled down and out, as well as being about 1/2-5/8" longer than stock or the ES shorty header (don't go there) on the engine that fit up to the EGR pipe perfectly.
I cut the boss off the header and cut it about 5/8" shorter, took it to a muffler shop and had it rewelded absolutely straight, then jet-coated the header. If anything, the boss was a BCH short, but alignment was perfect and had no problem with EGR pipe after the mods I made. No other problems with entire system--header, J-pipe, midpipe--all fit together perfectly.
It seems that most of these aftermarket header EGR outlets are either misaligned, too long, too short or a combination of the foregoing. It's too bad that the QC on aftermarket parts isn't tighter, in some cases.
