E4P Short Throw Shifter Installed

Ken shot me an email on Thursday asked if I were interested in trying out E4 Performance's new short shifter. ...obviously, I obliged. I ran over to Protege Garage and picked it up, and finally got a chance to put it in this afternoon.

The kit is supplied with everything you see here (excluding the mail and change):

It includes the shifter, a bushing set, and a few paperclips (to make one piece of the installation process possible without someone else's assistance).

The piece is CNC machined, TIG welded for durability and, when viewed side-by-side with the stocker, should last just as long.

Well, the installation took about an hour- 15 minutes of which was spent searching for one of the center console bolts I misplaced- and it went right in as I thought it would.

There was a minor issue of the spring-loaded pin for the reverse lockout making the slightest amount of contact with a plastic piece on the shifter assembly. I took a file to it for about 30 seconds and the problem was solved.. and, as would be expected from PG's customer service, Ken has assured me that the issue will be dealt with before any are shipped out to people.

I've never had a reason to remove the center console before, but it was hardly the painstaking operation I thought it would be. Installing the bushings was as easy as can be... there were one or two parts that could prove frustrating in installing the shifter, but it's nothing that can't be done. Like I said- it took me an hour without ever having touched this before.

And now for the results. This shifter is a full 2" lower than stock.

It's low. Real. Low. For reference, TWM claims to be a 1.75" drop.

(forgive my arthouse cell phone picture. I'll take a better one when I have some more light tomorrow)

Combined with the bushings, the shift feel is absolutely flawless. There is a ~33% reduction in throw, by my math, and once you are in gear you are locked in.

The best way I can liken this to the options already on the market is... this is a slammed TWM shifter with the "notchy" Cobb feel. Every movement is very reassuring to the driver.

I also took the time today to grind down my shift weight. Between the shifter, the bushings, and the weight, combined with my preexisting mounts & ETD, the car feels nothing like a factory car anymore. Every shift is smooth as glass and every movement is that slightest bit quicker.

All-in-all, I couldn't be more satisfied. This kit blows the other guys out of the water when you account for price ($150 retail for the shifter w/ bushings), and has no problems straight out of the box. It may not be the option for you if you have seen the TWM and feel it's too short, but what can I say? I luv the nub.

Nice price on what looks like a nice part, just not sure if I would throw my $$$ into a company/person that doesn't have any real history, at least that I can find...did a search on E4 Performance and came up empty...

ken...can you see if they can come up with a shifter that uses the stock height or maybe 1 inch shorter max and has a throw reduction greater than 40%?

i want a SS with more than 30-33% throw reduction not a shorty shifter thats going to make my driving position uncomfortable

Yeah I would be game for that as well! I had the TWM STS for about 6months and finally got tired of it, was cool at first. I love the shifter on a S2000 and RX-8 but we'll most likely never have that kind of shifting because we're high powered FWD with cable actuated shifter and 61/39 weight distribution. Nature of the beast unfortunately.

This shifter feels real close to an s2000 one if you ask me, having driven several. I don't anticipate any design changes honestly.

Come on man, such a statement would be a huge disservice to the S2000! The S2000 and Miata are probably the two slickest manuals I have ever rowed through. As much as I love my MS3, even I have to contend that it will NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER shift like an S2000 or Miata.

We were talking about this when I installed the shifter. I think the distinction that you have to make is that he's saying the shifter itself feels like an S2000- not necessarily the gear engagement.. seeing as there's weight transfer that we don't get, in order to make that car smoother. fwd ftl :(

This came out the day after I ordered my TWM sts so i'm angry I spent the extra cash but I am very happy with what I got.

thanks...ithnk im going to give the "jazzy shifter plate" a try...looks like people like it

I've tried it and after much experimentation, the Jazzy plate works best on it's own with the stock shifter. My "experiment" was to use the Jazzy plate in conjunction with my Cobb STS and although the throws were ultra short (Miata-like short), engagement effort was much too high to not be a nuisance. I fiddled with different throw settings on the Cobb but the effort was still too high and it wasn't always easy getting into first from a stop. The Jazzy plate is still a great piece for the money but I'd advise against pairing it with any other STS to try and get that elusive ultra-short throw shifter.

yeah...its for my stock shifter

glad to hear its a good piece...did you sell your plate?

^^

Not yet but I have a friend who wants to give it a try as well so unless he doesn't want it, it won't be going up for sale just yet. There's also another fellow on here ahead of you who wants it as well. Sorry

Are you using the stock shift boot? If so, does that making shifting harder due to the extra material? I'm wondering if i need to get a new boot also.
